The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is one of Debussy's most popular solo piano compositions. Number 8 in Book I of Debussy's two books of Preludes, the piece is an example of Debussy's experimentation with new scales, especially the pentatonic scale in this instance. The work, in Gb major, is performed almost entirely on the black keys of the piano. This arrangement for string quartet has been transposed to G major to make it easier to play for most string quartets. Take a listen to the MP3. It's only two and a half minutes long.

Christina Perri’s popular song is a wedding favourite all over the world. I arrange songs for a wedding quartet and this is often chosen by the bride and groom for their special day. This arrangement is 4 mins long and in B flat major. It is not the easiest of keys for strings but neither is it the hardest. It needs lots of vibrato, especially for the first violin, and subtlety from the inner parts to make sure they are heard but do not overpower the melody. The excerpt is from the instrumental section in which I exercised a little creativity! I would think players would need to be ABRSM Grade 7 to be able to play this well, but I could be wrong! I love carols in minor keys because there is so much scope for playing around with the harmony. I have re-arranged this carol for three violins instead of viola, as a flexible possibility. This version is almost identical, though Violin 3 sometimes goes up an octave and passes on the lower notes to the cellist who gets some double stopping! The quartet play it beautifully, but it could also be played by a very young quartet because most of the he double stopping includes one note on an open string.

Grade 5 ABRSM could manage it, and possible Grade 3! It will sound mediaeval with the open strings ringing out. The key is a very easy one for strings. However there are a few surprises in the counting so watch out! It isn’t always obvious, but with a few rehearsals you will have a fresh take on a very old carol.
