BACKSTORY ON “The Dog Had…� Variations The origin of “The Dog Had…� Variations� stems from a frantic voicemail received from the composer’s mother-in-law many years ago while on a visit exclaiming that our dog at the time, Pepper, a chocolate-brown and white springer spaniel, “HAD� an accident of explosive proportions on their basement rug and that we needed to “GET HOME� and deal with it immediately. At first the family was taken aback by the phone message, but ultimately it became a source of hilarity and shortly afterward, the composer’s wife created a rhyme from the message and a tune immediately sprung from that. This tune simply became something our family sung together periodically over many year’s time for amusement until now when the composer came up with the idea to set it to variations for string quartet. In this work, the tune is first heard in simple fashion in its entirety in the viola. Fragments of the tune follow in various guises. For example, the rhythm of the words “GET HOME� as well as “I’VE HAD IT� are prominent thematic ideas used in the piece. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. The work is a kind of double Chaconne, each part of which contains 26 chords based on specific permutations of fundamental notes and their harmonics. Each of the parts pass through alternating, harmonically contrasted planes, becoming entwined in the manner of a chimera through their rhythmic structure and dynamics. This intermittently produces a sort of ‘inner voice’ which runs through all four instruments. The fundamental notes and harmonics separate during the progress of the composition, becoming independent and then disintegrating. Original work for orchestra, I have reduced all the parts for string quartet. I have shortened the instrumental part of the beginning of the tenor recitative, starting it five measures earlier. Then I introduced the harmonic part of the winds by filling in the measures that these instruments played. In the audio it sounds a piano that plays practically the same as the strings. This score was played this way because the singers could only rehearse once with the quartet, so it gave them more security to hear the sound of the piano, to which the singers are more accustomed. The traditional piano part can therefore be used with this arrangement since neither the structure nor the key has been changed.

This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.
