Published by Klaus Wegner Hamilton (A0.1501537). This is a piece I wrote for String Quartet, taken from the 2024 Guildhall Composition Summer Course End-of-Course Concert. I was really obsessed with the pelog scale when I wrote this piece; I would sit at the piano, just running the scale up and down over and over again, absorbing the colours. I kept thinking about the first Gamelan theme in Poulenc's Concerto for two pianos, which I have directly quoted in this piece. I ended up taking this piece in a much different direction however, contrasting the playful with both the overbearingly bright and the ominous. I really learned a lot about writing for String Quartet and strings in general through this piece.   Note:There are some differences between the linked performance and the score being provided. Aside from some minor engraving changes as well as minor musical adjustments, the most notable change is that the piece has been moved from E Major to D Major to aid playability. Despite these changes, the recording is functionally the same as the score being provided.

AFTER HOLST is based on the ever-popular hymn Jupiter hymn from Gustav Holst's The Planets (also known as Thaxted; also known as I Vow to Thee, My Country). AFTER HOLST is in two movements: the first movement is a straight-forward arrangement of the original. The second movement, to be played immediately after the first, is a contrapuntal exploration of the possibilities inherent in the original, allowing for all four members of the quartet to be in the spotlight. AFTER HOLST is perfect for a string quartet looking for a more interesting arrangement of Gustav Holst's Hymn from Jupiter, something that is challenging but much more satisfying as a piece of music.

Published by Greg Woodward (A0.1460359). My third string quartet is a playful and melodic work, encompassing a wide range of styles and moods with a high degree of thematic unity. The joyful, dance-like character of the opening eventually disintegrates into a moment of sorrow, before a pensive, introspective section with elements of Herrmann and Shostakovich. A grand crescendo leads to a huge A major chord (a reference to the Beatles' A Day In The Life) that gradually becomes more dissonant as it progresses underneath a constant high A pedal point in the first violin. A chant-like section featuring open fifths follows, before a driving, angular section in 5/4. This recurs a few times interspersed with some musical episodes before ushering in a majestic transformation of the earlier chant-like section. After this runs its course and dies out, a final section revisits the dance-like energy of the first section which borrows thematic material from all through the piece before speeding into a final jazzy major sixth pizzacato chord.This would make a good concert piece.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

This selection also features the use of props - a cutting board (preferably with a cutout area to grip the board easily) and an inflated latex balloon are required to make various sound effects. Published by Jeremy Crosmer (A0.839102). Ignatius Sancho is thought to be the first person of African origin to vote in Britain. He was born on a slave ship sailing to the Caribbean, and became an orphan soon after. While he was a slave, his intellect impressed the Duke of Montagu, who lent him access his library. He ran away at age 18 to the Montagu house, where he developed his skills in music, poetry, reading and writing, eventually becoming a prominent abolitionist. By 1774 he was able to open his own grocery shop in London, and owning property allowed him to vote. The 12 Country Dances were written in 1779, shortly before his death, and dedicated to Miss North. The dances were performed in line-dance formation, and the original score includes instructions.
