This is one of six Bulgarian pieces for a string quartet (Violins 1 & 2, Viola and Cello).  It is from the Rodopi Mountain region.  The meters are 9/8 (2,2,2,3), 7/8 (2,2,3) and 6/8 (3,3).  The first 28 measures the cello player plays a pizzicato half note, taps the tip of his/her toe for a quater note and a dotted quarter note, then stomps his/her heel for a half note length, then he/she again similarly taps the tip of his/her toe.

This is a short string quartet featuring a Gregorian melody on violin with harmony provided in the lower voices by violin, viola and cello.  It is meant to be played in a free chant style with rubato; however, mixed meters are provided to give an approximate idea of the counting.  This piece would be suitable for a school or church setting and is derived from ancient sacred music written for the Catholic Church.  It is quite an easy piece in D Dorian mode, thus no sharps or flats.  The quiet beauty of this piece is suitable for meditative or concert use.  An interlude of gentle improvisation could be added with a repeat of the theme at the end if a longer piece is desired (permission to do that hereby granted).  Students, teachers and church music directors as well as professional musicians looking for a short easy work may find this a useful addition to their repertoire.  (Please note:  the audio recording is a guide and does not necessarily reflect the proper phrasing as indicated in the score.).

This is not my first string quartet, but I think this is great program music; the titles of the movements (One of Those Daze, Reflections, Good Times) speak for themselves. The first movement explores rhythms and different meters (same pulse). The second movement is calming and reflective, like a prayer. The third movement is euphoric and probably the easiest one to play, which can be welcome if your group is giving a concert. Needless to say, the two outer movements are good for gigs such as receptions and parties. The score and each part is included in one PDF. Audio will be forthcoming upon being recorded.

Traditional string quartet with opt. violin part for viola. The introduction begins in a somewhat solemn nature, building in tension and then in repose where it introduces the hymn Savior Like A Shepherd Lead Us. The texture is in a traditional harmonization with the tune in the first violin where it gives over to the cello on the chorus with gentle punctuations in the upper voices. An imitative motif serves as a transition progresses leading into He Leadeth Me with the tune in the cello. The violin takes over with a modified tune and then in a fughetta-like series of entrances leads into a modulation where the cello expresses the tune with the upper voices accompanying with moving rhythms. The tune of All The Way My Savior Leads Me is presented by the viola with a violin obbligato overhead leading into a full ensemble with rich and moving harmonies. A change of meters gives way to a change of counterpoint and God Leads Us Along. Here, it moves amongst the various parts and gives way to sweet release.
