Having worked primarily nightshift for the past few years, my life began a somewhat alternative nature – my day time was illuminated by the moon, and I watched the sun rise every day for three and a half years…I saw the city through different eyes, and watched as various denizens of the night would emerge and cavort beneath The Midnight Sun. I was exposed to an entirely different culture and learned that the city really didn’t sleep after all. The piece starts with the decline of the sun as the shadows grow longer and the creatures of the night begin to emerge beneath the stars. Secondly, we observe the midnight moon which acts as our illumination in the dark of night. Continuing on, the piece begins its celestial dance among the stars of the Northern hemisphere and finally ends with the emergence of dawn – the night slipping away like fragile tendrils of fog, or the vague ether of a dream. David Jaedyn Conley, 2005 Composer David Jaedyn Conley moves easily between the stridency of the Moderns and the sweetness of the Romantics. One of the most vivid memories I have of camping is a summer that my entire Jesse family went to northern Wisconsin and stayed at a beautiful campground with a huge lake. The most beautiful scene was when sunset occurred and the lake began to become motionless, with a glass-like surface. It is in these moments that I recreated musically in the beginning and ending of this piece.

My second string quartet Aqua Vitae is a portrait of the natural water systems that bring clean water from the great mountain that shadows Hobart, Tasmania, through various rivulets back to the river, where it can be purified by evaporation and return to the top of the mountain to begin the cycle again.The opening section uses a blend of folk and old liturgical styles to suggest the purity of the source of the rivulet at the top of the mountain. This then gives way to a section illustrating the growing streams as a magnet for local life – using fragments of bird calls and pizzicato water “plops”, and incorporating a canon of a falling figure alternating and superimposing triplet and semiquaver rhythms representing the turbulence of waterfalls. A sharp turn into the controlled water flow through the city finds urban noises (again using the grace note “flicks” from the birds earlier but in more man-made context) and the eerie sounds of the underground pipes that divert the flow, before the water tumbles into the river and is once again drawn into the sky to be spirited away to the top of the mountain.Thanks to Anita, Emily and Nara for their recording of the piece linked below.Visit my YouTube page for more performances, arrangements and compositions.

Brahms's Prelude and Fugue in A Minor was composed in 1856 when Brahms was intensively studying counterpoint and the organ. The work consists of a prelude and a fugue, a common form for organ compositions at the time. This structure allowed Brahms to showcase his mastery of free-flowing, improvisatory writing and strict contrapuntal techniques. The fugue subject features a distinctive head motive of two punctuating chords, a unifying device throughout the movement. Brahms incorporates fugal procedures not just in the fugue section but also in the transitional and developmental sections of the work, blending fugal and sonata-form elements. This foreshadows his later compositions' sophisticated integration of counterpoint and large-scale form. The Prelude and Fugue WoO 9 is an important early example of Brahms's organ works, which frame his entire compositional output. It demonstrates his mastery of the organ medium and his development as a composer during this formative period.
