The Stars and Stripes Forever is a patriotic American march widely considered to be the magnum opus of composer John Philip Sousa. By a 1987 act of the U.S. Congress, it is the official National March of the United States of America.The Stars and Stripes Forever follows the standard American military march form. The march begins with a four-bar introduction, which is followed by a dotted, playful melody. Its trio is the most famous part of the march. Violin I player play the famous obbligato in the first repeat of the trio (the one after the breakstrain). The melody is passed between the cello 1, 2, and 3 parts while cello 4 is a much simpler part containing only quarter and half notes. The cello 1 part includes a very small section in tenor clef, all of the other parts are completely in bass clef. The difficulty level is suitable for very beginners through intermediate players. It can also be played by a larger cello ensemble by doubling players on parts.
