Mark Bisson #3628443. Published by Mark Bisson (A0.900887). This is a modern take on an old Christmas favourite, It has a slower tempo and a more atmospheric, reflective and poignant quality than more conventional treatments. It was based on similar piano arrangements of the same music entitled Ambient Carols. In both cases the music was originally conceived as incidental or soundtrack music. It lasts around 2.5 minutes. Suitable as part of a programme for more experienced High School students or as music played in the background of a Christmas event.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.938382 Composed by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 42 pages. Colin Bayliss #6123. Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938382). (B33) was first written as Piano Sonata No.1 [B12] in late 1981. It was revised into a string quartet in January 1990. There are four movements, and all the thematic material, whether tonal, atonal or serial is derived from the music of the first seven bars. After this opening, the first movement is written in a straightforward sonata form, using a mixture of tonal and serial themes in constantly changing rhythms. The second movement Adagio also contrasts tonal and serial themes, while the third movement is a short scherzo and trio, with an atonal motif in the scherzo being treated in simple rhythms. A lyrical variation of the main theme of the slow movement is used for the trio, and develops further into a simple diatonic tune. The last movement is a kaleidoscopic treatment of the preceding thematic material, together with further variations and short contrapuntal passages, to give the effect of a rondo. The motif from the beginning of the whole work then returns as a coda to unify the quartet. The Score and Parts are available on this site as separate downloads The sound sample is the second movement - performed by the Lochrian Ensemble The complete 6 string quartets performed by the Lochrian Ensemble are available on itunes: see: http://www.dwsolo.com/colinbayliss/ and for this particular quartet: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/colin-bayliss-string-quartet/id573541672.

String quartet - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q778629 (Beethoven-Study IV). Composed by Joerg Widmann. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 35 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q778629. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q778629). The 9th String Quartet forms the penultimate work in my Beethoven Study quartet cycle. Chronologically, however, it was composed after the 10th Quartet Cavatina. And indeed, when composing it, it felt like the conclusion of the cycle. While the 6th Quartet Studie über Beethoven, which opened the cycle, was still in one movement, the 7th in two and the 8th in three, this 9th Quartet is a four-movement work. The sacred musical number 9 inspired me to create an especially substantial and intense composition. The second movement, a Scherzo, and the fourth movement Allegro alla marcia have become simply gigantic in their dimensions and in the density of information and impulses in comparison to their historical models. This 9th quartet has a particular focus on Beethoven’s still unattainable Quartet in C# minor op. 131. The radical nature and modernity of this work are still burning issues for us today. As in the other quartets in the cycle, I have been amazed at the new forms which have evolved during my preoccupation with their historical models and the extent of previously unknown spiritual depths in my own music during the process of composition. While my study of Beethoven's symphonies in the orchestral piece Con brio led to the discovery of new tonal possibilities for the orchestra (the timpani treatment!) and the juxtaposition of Beethoven's choral fantasy with the Latin Dies irae in my ARCHE oratorio made it possible to develop new theological and thematic points of focus, in the string quartet cycle it is above all the development and discovery of new forms that could only emerge through the study of Beethoven's quartets. String Quartet Cello,Double Bass,Piano,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1376321 By Heidi Savoie. By Heidi Savoie. Arranged by Heidi Savoie. Classical,Contemporary,Jazz,Pop,Singer/Songwriter. 15 pages. Heidi Savoie #960865. Published by Heidi Savoie (A0.1376321). This score is an arrangement for piano, violin I and II, viola, cello, bass with optional drums.Backstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax. Credits: I would like to thank Cole Canaday for the nuance, imagination and depth of understanding with which he brought this piece to life. I would also like to thank Blake Hamilton and Anastace for providing invaluable audio engineering feedback.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.731805 Composed by Turlough O Carolan. Arranged by Thomas Quigley. Celtic,Concert,Holiday,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 7 pages. Thomas Quigley #3389163. Published by Thomas Quigley (A0.731805). This deeply moving arrangement with its sweet and subtle harmonies, can be used on its own in performance, or with one or two other O Carolan arrangements on either side. A famous melody, by the great Irish harp composer, it is given very sympathetic and sensitive treatment. The tune is mostly played on 1st violin whilst the accompaniment is always varied and interesting, enhancing the beauty of the original composition. Despite some high notes it is suitable for students and amateur quartets.

Baritone and string quartet - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q24633 By Franz Liszt. Composed by Aribert Reimann and Franz Liszt. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 20 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q24633. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q24633). German.Aribert Reimann’s idea to arrange the lieder of Franz Liszt for baritone and string quartet goes back to his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, recording some of these lieder for the German broadcasting company formerly known as Sender Freies Berlin (SFB). Since then, Reimann has continued to be fascinated by Liszt’s thrilling harmony and unconventional treatment of the voice. Here, he has compiled a cycle containing seven lieder from Liszt’s middle and late periods, arranged so that each song is the logical continuation of its predecessor. Liszt’s fundamental harmony has been retained, but the registers have been altered to such an extent that they appear in a completely new light.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.731808 Composed by Irish Traditional. Arranged by Thomas Quigley. Celtic,Concert,Holiday. Score and parts. 7 pages. Thomas Quigley #3390431. Published by Thomas Quigley (A0.731808). This superb Irish air is given classical treatment here. The tune is shared between 1st violin and cello, whilst the harmonies are always interesting and appropriate for Celtic music. To enhance the mood, the pitch rises in the latter half, but students and amateur quartets should cope. A performance suggestion would be to play this air, followed by a contrasting Irish piece such as The Kesh Jig. Or, this could be used as a middle movement in a set of three. Nonetheless, it is a very fine piece, worthy of addition to the Irish quartet repertoire.
