String Quartet String Quartet - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.886701

Composed by Panagiotis Theodossiou. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 58 pages. Panagiotis Theodossiou #3579277. Published by Panagiotis Theodossiou (A0.886701).

String Quartet in memoriam Gyorgi Ligeti (2006)
The work is written in the memory of G. Ligeti. It goes from strict atonal to tonal and almost neoclassical idiom, from inner intense expression to parody and grotesque humour. Elements so characteristic in the musical language of the honored composer.
The 5 parts are: 1. Introduction: Strange Visitors (Lento misterioso), 2. Scherzo I: Interrupted cha-cha : Faith's Dance (Andantino scherzando), 3.Intermezzo: Et expecto...(Larghetto semplice), 4. Scherzo II: Devil's Dance (Allegro giocoso), 5. Finale: Flames (Feroce)
There is also a programmatic scenario behind the five mouvements of the work: Strange visitors appear threatening or cheating. And suddenly Faith start to dance an interrupted cha –cha. Expectation stands in the center of the work and in the soul of our hero. Devil’s dance leads to the final test. Flames. Flames of purification or flames of hell?
It has been performed by the ensemble ALEA III under Theodor Antoniou at Tsai Performance Centre, Boston University in 2007. Parts of the work have been performed by Athens Bridge Quartet at Faculty Lounge, Deree College under the project Composing the String Quartet of Deree Arts Festival in 2013.
Athens Bridge Quartet recorded it ion CD (MOTIVO BQ1070) among Greek Composers Works in 2017.

Super Collider (2010, 18 minutes)
Kronos Quartet and electronic gamelan

Composed for Kronos Quartet & Gamelan Elektrika. Premiered at Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival, August 13, 2010 by Kronos Quartet and Gamelan Elektrika: Evan Ziporyn, kendang; Sean Mannion, kempli; Balaji Mani, ceng-ceng; Laurel Pardue & Sachi Sato, pemade; Katie Puckett & Sam Schmetterer, kantilan; Mark Buckles, Ramon Castillo, Elizabeth Johansen, Julie Strand, reong; Beth Mullins & Po-Chun Wang, pokok

Gamelan Elektrika is an electronic virtual gamelan designed and developed by Alex Rigopulos (founder and CEO of Harmonix Music, inventors of video games Guitar Hero and Rock Band). The piece is inspired by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - the largest machine ever built, that's purpose is to change science forever, recreating the beginning of the universe in a tube and proving (or disproving) the theories of particle physics of the last half-century.

Particle physics is the unbelievable in pursuit of the unimaginable. To pinpoint the smallest fragments of the universe you have to build the biggest machine in the world. To recreate the first millionths of a second of creation you have to focus energy on an awesome scale. - The Guardian

Super Collider will explore two obverse sound worlds and traditions, the vast culture of the string quartet juxtaposed with the ancient performance methods of a gamelan, unleashed through the unlimited sonic universe of electronics. In our own test-tube experiment, this musical moment of collision will hopefully achieve similarly unparalleled results.

What does particle physics have to do with music and art? String theory, which the CERN facility hopes to verify or disprove, presumes that matter itself is the manifestation of resonant vibrations, that the world itself is a universal harmony. This post-modern notion - which Kronos embodies with every performance - itself resonates with the ancient Hindu notion of om, the absolute manifest, which is the basis of Indonesian gamelan. We will bring these two ideas of resonance together by combining Kronos with a gamelan - even a virtual one.

The behavior of subatomic particles is probabilistic, group-oriented: the motion of any one particle is unpredictable and unknowable: it's what the group does that counts. This could also be a description of the Balinese gamelan, where individual virtuosity is subsumed to interlocking patterns, composite melodies, the sound of the whole. This is also the spirit of Kronos.

When Robert Moog developed his synthesizer in the 1960s, he modeled its functionality on the piano and on western music in general - a single person, sitting at a keyboard. This is one reason why it was popularized by Wendy Carlos' Swtiched On Bach. Gamelan Elek Trika takes a similar approach to the very distinctive musical practices of Indonesia. Like the great gamelans of Bali and Java, Gamelan Elek Trika works as a single unit, played by a complete ensemble. The instruments are played like a gamelan - metallophones, drums, and gongs, playing interlocking patterns - but all are channeled through a central 'brain', a single processing unit which controls their sound, tuning, and timbre. The composer can thus alter the sonic environment globally, not just for one instrument at a time but for the complete ensemble.

Super Collider is made possible by generous support from Alex Rigopulos and Sachi Sato, MIT, and the MIT Media Lab. Gamelan Elektrika instruments produced by Alex Rigopulos; sensors, electronics, and interface design by Andrew Boch, Matt Boch, and Laurel Pardue; technical assembly by Stéphanie Bouchard; frame design and assembly by Quentin Kelly.

Composed by English Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Christmas,Historic,Standards,Traditional. 15 pages. Jmsgu3 #1079563. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1504108).

The 12 Days of Christmas is significant for its cultural and religious implications. This period, also known as Twelvetide, spans from December 25 (Christmas Day) to January 6 (Epiphany), marking the time between the birth of Jesus and the arrival of the Magi.

Historical Context
The tradition of the 12 days was formalized by the Council of Tours in 567, which proclaimed this time a sacred season, emphasizing the importance of celebration and reflection during this period. Each day is associated with various saints and religious observances, making it a time of spiritual significance for many Christians.

The Carol and Its Meaning
The well-known carol The Twelve Days of Christmas lists a series of increasingly extravagant gifts given on each of the twelve days. Although it is often perceived as a simple festive song, there are theories about its deeper meanings. One popular but debunked theory suggests that the gifts symbolize elements of the Christian faith, serving as a secret catechism for Catholics during times of persecution. However, this interpretation lacks substantial historical evidence and is considered more of a myth than fact.

Cultural Practices
Culturally, the 12 Days of Christmas have evolved into various traditions, including gift-giving, feasting, and festive gatherings. In some cultures, gifts are exchanged on January 6, celebrated as Three Kings Day, while others may celebrate throughout twelve days. The carol likely originated as a memory game for children, intended to be fun and engaging rather than a severe religious text.

In summary, the 12 Days of Christmas represent a blend of religious significance, historical tradition, and cultural celebration, making it an enduring aspect of the Christmas season.

Six Lieder by Theodor Kirchner. Composed by Aribert Reimann. This edition: score and parts. Downloadable, score and parts. Duration 23 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q48897. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q48897).

German.

Theodor Kirchner (1823-1903) began composing at a very early age, initially receiving great support from Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann and subsequently from Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Even his Lieder op. 1 already display a clear formal structure, the concentration of tonal material within a limited space and rhythmic variability. I have selected six lieder based on poems by Heinrich Heine originating from different periods of Kirchner’s life and interleaved them between seven bagatelles which make selective references to the previous or next lied, sometimes as a single note, a chord or a gesture. The Sieben Bagatellen can additionally be performed separately, independently of the complete cycle. (Aribert Reimann).

In the Bleak Midwinter is an essential and beloved Christmas carol with several notable aspects.

Origins and Authorship
The carol originated as a poem titled A Christmas Carol, written by Christina Rossetti, a prominent English poet, in 1872. Rossetti was known for combining deep Christian faith with rich artistic sensibility in her works.

Musical Settings
The poem was set to music multiple times, with two versions becoming particularly popular: Gustav Holst's hymn tune Cranham in 1906, which is more straightforward and suitable for congregational singing. Harold Darke's more complex choral setting from 1911 was named the best Christmas carol in a 2008 poll of choirmasters and choral experts.

Poetic and Theological Significance
The carol is notable for its stark imagery, contrasting the harsh winter landscape with the divine incarnation—the paradoxical juxtaposition of earthly elements with the ineffable nature of Christ's birth. Profound theological insights are conveyed through simple language—reflection on the meaning of gift-giving about Christ's birth.

Cultural Impact
In the Bleak Midwinter has become a beloved part of Christmas traditions. Choirs perform it widely, and various artists record it.
Many music experts consider The carol one of the greatest Christmas songs. Its imagery and themes have inspired reflection on rest, renewal, and the deeper meaning of the winter season. The enduring popularity of In the Bleak Midwinter stems from its beautiful blend of evocative poetry, rich theological content, and dynamic musical settings, making it a cherished part of Christmas celebrations for many.
