The music of pianist-composer Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944) was highly popular in her lifetime, but mostly neglected afterward. It is fortunately now being rediscovered. Her character pieces, of which she wrote many, display charm and wit, with elegant French romantic sensibility.

This set of arrangements for string quartet includes includes selected works composed between 1887 and 1910. It begins with two excerpts from her ballet suite Callirhoë for piano, Pas des Amphores and Pas des écharpes (Scarf Dance), followed by Idylle, from a set of 6 Romances sans Paroles. The next piece, Chanson Russe (Russian Song), if it isn’t based on an actual folksong, is a clever imitation. The set concludes with the gently uplifting Romance in D major.

During his short lifetime Schubert composed prolifically in many genres.  His original composition of Marche Militaire was for 'four hands' or two Pianos, and all arrangements, including this one, usually present only the first part of the first of three marches that comprise the complete work (Trois Marches Militaire, Op.51).  Among the devices used by Schubert is clever decoration of the opening and closing unison phrases which are suggestive of a bugle call.

This is a massive undertaking. Written in six movements, this quartet has much to say.
I - Church Bells are heard throughout in many keys. No matter where I go I can always hear them in the distance
II - This movement is untitled seeing as I didn't come up with a clever name for it. I wrote it on  very cloudy day and that is all I can remember about it.
III - Happy Times is a reduction of the same piece in my Piano Sonata: Blue.
IV - Dance - This movement is a dance of death. It is very obvious that something has gone wrong and there is no chance of fixing it.
V - Taking Turns - The title is self -explanatory. Originally this was going to be the beginning of a mini quartet but I decided against it.
VI - Death March - This is a feeling I know all to well. It is held together by the canonical wandering melody that attempts to shine through the dark.

Dessau’s String Quartet movement was written while he was also working on Brecht’s opera Puntila. After Brecht’s death in 1956 Dessau found himself looking for a new direction. On the one hand he was still working on music begun in collaboration with the poet, while on the other hand Dessau was trying to work towards a socially oriented musical aesthetic, which led him to compose songs for political purposes. Even this Quartet movement does not owe its inspiration purely to an artistic vision. In spite of its technical demands, the piece is intended to be comprehensible and could even be played by an amateur ensemble in its cleverly reduced form. Only discovered after the composer’s death, the Movement for String Quartet is published for the first time in this edition.
