HOT VENT GASES depicts the toxic bubbles rising from the ocean floor. VENT LIFE represents the weird worms, microrganisms, crabs and fish which survive there. VOLCANO  music describes explosions, falling boulders and terror, and finally mourns the loss of life, devastated landscape and villages. EARTHQUAKE:  the music tries to depict the swaying effect and noise, falling bricks and running feet. More mourning.

The work, scored for seven string instruments â€� 2 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos & contrabass, is in seven sections: four movements with three interludes in between.Moderato, Humble Vale Interlude IFunk ScherzoInterlude IIBossa nova Interlude III Perpetuo motoWhen Mark Ludwig, Director of the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation, told me that Seven Steps would be premiered at the Hancock Shaker Village, I thought it would be most appropriate to use a Shaker tune as a source for this work.The work begins with Humble Vale. Humble Vale is part of the Hancock Hymnal: 1850 compiled by Deborah Rentz Moore.The most obvious element in this beautiful melody is the predominance of the pentatonic mode. The Funk Scherzo movement is a dissertation on pentatonic subsets: major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths. The Bossa nova movement, although not pentatonic melodically, is full of chords derived pentatonically: chords stacked in fourths, for example. The last movement, Perpetuo moto, is most definitely pentatonic in its theme: an incessant repeating figure with explosive pentatonic flurries of major seconds, minor thirds and perfect fourths.In between the four movements I have inserted three interludes. Interlude I is an interlocking pair of waltzing pentatonic melodies for two violins. Interlude II is a solemn march on an Fâ€�sharp pedal. Interlude III is a quasiâ€�canonic descending scale that resolves into a big Gâ€�flat major chord. It is my intention that these interludes provide a smooth and slithery connection from one movement into the next. Enjoy!!!The work is dedicated to Miles Davis. His 1963 LP/CD Seven Steps To Heaven is a seminal recording for all music lovers. It made a huge impression on me when I was a teenager in São Paulo, Brazil. I must have listened to it a thousand times. I know every solo by heart. Heaven is Miles’ domain.

It retells the tale of the Fall of Mankind – the moment when Adam and Eve were enticed by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, and as a result were banished from the Garden of Eden. Milton gives far more detail than Genesis. The song presents the story from Eve’s point of view. I edited the passages for scansion and to suit a modern ear, and ended up with lyrics that fall into three sections: Eve's feelings of shame and guilt, her overhearing the sentence, and her realisation of what she will lose. In Christ Alone is a popular modern Christian hymn, written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. Composed in 2001, the lyrics of this song are credal in nature, speaking about the life, death and resurrection of Christ.This arrangement is an adaptable arrangement suitable for many uses. The first, repeated section contains a basic hymn tune arrangement that is easy and able to be played by all players. If accompanying singing, then you can just repeat this section for the four verses.Following this, the arrangement explores the text musically. A short shift into the tonic minor expands the words There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain before a sudden shift back to the tonic major with the words Bursting forth in glorious day. The accompaniment becomes a triplet ostinato which helps bring out the victory theme in the latter part of this verse, invoking a feel of a snare drum in a marching band.The music then starts preparing for a final verse, taking a small melodic motif and passing it around the quartet as it modulates up a tone to E major. The last half of this verse is repeated, with the second violin accompanying part mirroring the melody an octave lower to provide a base for the soaring melody of the first violin high on the E string.This arrangement would be suitable for church accompaniment (first section repeated), or for special performance. The first violin part is quite advanced, ranging to G#6 (sixth position), however the remainder of the parts would be playable by intermediate players.
