This beautiful hymn was first published by John Francis Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi (1751), with four Latin verses, and music set in the traditional square notation used for medieval liturgical music. Besides John Francis Wade, the tune has been attributed to several musicians, from John Reading and his son, to Handel, and even the German composer Gluck. The Portuguese composer Marcos Portugal or King John IV of Portugal have also been credited. Thomas Arne, whom Wade knew, is another possible composer. Jolly Old St. Nicholas is a significant Christmas song rooted in a poem by Emily Huntington Miller, published in December 1865 as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine. The song's lyrics, now widely recognized, closely resemble Miller's original poem. However, some attributions have also been made to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, and John Piersol McCaskey, who claimed authorship in 1867.

Historical Context
The music for Jolly Old St. Nicholas is generally credited to James R. Murray, first published in 1874. The song has since become a staple of Christmas music, with numerous recordings by various artists, including Ray Smith, Chet Atkins, and Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Themes and Lyrics
The song features a child speaking to Santa Claus, eagerly anticipating Christmas and sharing gift wishes. This interaction reflects the broader themes of childhood innocence and the joy of giving, which are central to Christmas. The lyrics highlight a sense of wonder and excitement as the child asks Santa to choose gifts for them, emphasizing trust in Santa's judgment.

Cultural Impact
Jolly Old St. Nicholas has become a beloved Christmas classic, often performed in various musical styles, including jazz and pop. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its ability to resonate with children and adults, encapsulating the spirit of Christmas and the joy of anticipation accompanying the holiday season. Overall, the song serves not only as a festive tune but also as a cultural artifact that reflects the evolution of the Santa Claus figure from St. Nicholas, a historical Christian bishop known for his generosity, to the modern-day Santa Claus celebrated in various traditions worldwide.

In the Bleak Midwinter is an essential and beloved Christmas carol with several notable aspects.

Origins and Authorship
The carol originated as a poem titled A Christmas Carol, written by Christina Rossetti, a prominent English poet, in 1872. Rossetti was known for combining deep Christian faith with rich artistic sensibility in her works.

Musical Settings
The poem was set to music multiple times, with two versions becoming particularly popular: Gustav Holst's hymn tune Cranham in 1906, which is more straightforward and suitable for congregational singing. Harold Darke's more complex choral setting from 1911 was named the best Christmas carol in a 2008 poll of choirmasters and choral experts.

Poetic and Theological Significance
The carol is notable for its stark imagery, contrasting the harsh winter landscape with the divine incarnation—the paradoxical juxtaposition of earthly elements with the ineffable nature of Christ's birth. Profound theological insights are conveyed through simple language—reflection on the meaning of gift-giving about Christ's birth.

Cultural Impact
In the Bleak Midwinter has become a beloved part of Christmas traditions. Choirs perform it widely, and various artists record it.
Many music experts consider The carol one of the greatest Christmas songs. Its imagery and themes have inspired reflection on rest, renewal, and the deeper meaning of the winter season. The enduring popularity of In the Bleak Midwinter stems from its beautiful blend of evocative poetry, rich theological content, and dynamic musical settings, making it a cherished part of Christmas celebrations for many.
