Here'a suite about life in the Isle of Man based on Manx folk tunes and religious music.  All the harmonies and some decorations are mine. There are 5 movements.

 

I MAINLY CELEBRATIONS:  I found all the melodies in The Mona Melodies, a group of traditional tunes (probably heard in Douglas) collected in 1820.  Hunt the Wren is a surprising, lively, traditional event on St Stephen's Day when villagers dance and sing round the town hoping for gifts. This tune is dorian.  A Lullaby in aeolian follows, then In Praise of Wine, in ionian, while at the same time fragments of the Lullaby are heard from inside a home.  The Wren group return.




II FAITH Religious music  I assume could have been heard in Manx churches.  Two supposedly Celtic-style antiphon melodies from a 13th-century breviary from Caen  (a) The Holy Cross (b)  The Saints.  I made them into parallel organum with a drone.  Between them is an elaborate ancient melody (labelled Martyrs) for Psalm 80 (Lord, come and save us), which I found with Gaelic words.  I accompany with 3 more parts.  The whole movement is in dorian mode.




III EMOTIONS:  Mourning for a Prince is a mixolydian tune also found in The Mona Melodies.  I give the tune to the viola.  In Praise of Beauty is sung by the cello in C major.  This tune is also found in The Mona Melodies, as Brown Oxen (Berry Dowin).  William Brown (Illiam Dhoan) (should be Dhone, I believe) is the air used for Love Lost and Found: again from The Mona Melodies.  I made it C minor at first (love lost) , then  the original version in F major (love found).




IV CAR JUAN NAN (Let's All Dance) is a reel, from which I took a few bars and made it into a round.  My source was the book Ed. Colin Jerry Kiaull yn Theay 1:  Manx music and songs for folk instruments




V WORK, REST and PLAY.  The Spinning Song is major/ionian, the Milking Song is major pentatonic, but my mooing bass part does not respect that: I found those tunes in  Kiaull yn Theay.   The Harvest Celebration Dance (Yn Mheillea) is from manxmusic.com.  The Goodnight Song (Arrane Oie Vie) was traditionally sung after a Christmas Eve event in the church, after more formal proceedings and after the singing of many gloomy vaguely religious songs there and a visit to the pub.  Collected from Mr E, Corteen and Mr T.  Taggart of Malew:  my source:  manxmusic.com.

This timeless piece by Bach is from one of his suites. Known as the Air on the G string, but it does not have to be played on the G string. It's a classic for all occassions, be it a concert or a wedding, and works very well as a string quartet.

Originally written for piano and string orchestra in memory of my brother Steve, and performed in Tauranga NZ in March 2023, I have re-scored Be Still for piano quintet (piano with string quartet). This quintet version was premiered by the composer in July 2024. The music starts with the piano, with the viola leading the strings in after eight bars. The music is gentle, peaceful and tranquil and suited to any occasion where peacefulness and serenity are required. Some bowing markings have been included as a guide. A sweet, lovely ballad made popular by guitarist John Williams and Cleo Laine, this piece by Stanley Meyers was made famous in the film score to The Deer Hunter. Arranged for string quaret, this would be a perfect piece for a wedding processional or simply for prenuptial or reception music.  There are plenty of places for making cuts to adjust the legnth to suit or adding repeats, however in this arrangement I have included both bridges for a long play version if desired.  With all repeats, it is about 5 minutes long.

First, the audio is from Finale and it is difficult to make it play like a human. There should be much more freedom and flexibility in the melody line. This is such a beautiful and romantic song that is great for weddings, prelude, ceremony or any special occasion. I have featured the viola with the melody throughout the song. I have followed the Lea Solange version instead of the Vanessa Williams version. It seemed to suit the string quartet better. It goes from G minor to G major. All players will have to shift so this is not for beginners. This would also make a great encore showpiece for a professional string quartet that wants to use popular material.

This is an arragement of William Byrds setting of the short Eucharistic hymn that has been set to music by various composers. The hymn dates from the 14th century, with this setting completed in 1605. The arrangement for string quartet, with the polyphonic texture synonymous with madrigals, would be perfect to perform in a generous acoustic or would be well suited as easy listening background music. A string quartet arrangement of 'The One I Love' by R.E.M. It includes the full score and separate parts for both violins, viola and cello. This piece has a lot of movement and interplay between parts, and some of the syncopation might prove tricky. However, it is not over-complicated and offers a nice balance between beauty and momentum.

This arrangement would work well at a wedding, or where a more contemporary piece is required for string quartet. It would also suit somewhere that needs classy background music, but with a more familiar, modern edge.

This popular and much loved hymn Amazing Grace, is arranged to the American melody 'New Britain' for string quartet. The 1st violin states the melody, accompanied by the other instruments. The first variation beginning at measure 21 sees the melody in the cello and viola, with a slower tempo allowing the upward moving 1st and 2nd violin figures to provide a gentle and moving accompaniment. The 2nd variation has the melody in the 2nd violin with the cello embarking on an energetic 'walking bass' accompaniment. In the concluding section the tempo and dynamic drop back for the final cadence. This arrangement is suitable in a church service at anytime during the year and especially during the Easter season. This is also ideal repertoire for High School and College String Quartets. The performance duration is over three minutes and the full score has four individual parts attached.
