String Quartet No. 3 (Old-Time) was composed on the occasion marking 400 years of history dating from the days of the first European settlements. My specific task from the Hudson Commission was to concentrate music based on the natural habitat and beauty of the Hudson as well as on the time of the first European settlers. It was natural for me to think about old-time fiddling in this light. In 1909 Washington Irving described the Catskill Mountains as a dismembered branch of the Appalachian Mountains. My own Dutch ancestors settled in the Hudson Valley in the early 1600’s, and eventually traveled down the Appalachians to settle in the South in the early 1800’s. The old-time fiddling that dominated those areas along that route is the musical language utilized in creating this String Quartet.

For the musical genesis of the Quartet, I initially created phrases from the fiddle that were molded out of old-time fiddling tradition. With technical twists and turns, the phrases became unique and new but all the while still connected to the tradition. It is these phrases that I used as material to create the String Quartet. Through the process of composing, techniques such as re- harmonization, development, canonic applications spill over each other like the Hudson tributaries in the Adirondacks. The counterpoint of the Quartet invigorates and establishes itself. The result is a wholly participating body emphasizing transitions from the traditional to the contemporary in sound and style. The music here is no longer fiddle music as the inventions of the quartet embarks on a new story, a new way to play, and with a new musical idea to put forward.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1195784

Composed by Hanley Macdonald, Mack /Johnson, Donaldson/Kahn. Arranged by Des McNutty. Broadway,Classical,Jazz,Musical/Show,Standards,Wedding. Score and parts. 46 pages. Des Press #794950. Published by Des Press (A0.1195784).

Original arrangements for String Quartet (Back Home Again in) Indiana (Hanley/MacDonald) The Charleston (Mack/Johnson) I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight (Donaldson/Kahn) Arranged by Des McNutty Charleston Times was first punished by Chugnut Press in 2000 and distributed by SJ Music, following the long-winded and arduous challenges of obtaining licences from various copyright-owners by snail-post. Arrangeme has simplified this process considerably! Thanks! The notes are unchanged; only the layout has been revised. This much-demanded re-issue marks 100 years of that iconic dance, The Charleston, from the Broadway show Runnin' Wild (1923), which entered the public domain in 2019. Indiana and I Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight are staples of the 1920's canon. These original arrangements are not based on previously-existing versions, although Indiana is mashed up with interpolations of a well-known work from the late 18th-century.... The level is on the easier side of “advanced”; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.

By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Pop,Rock. 7 pages. RayThompsonMusic #647539. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1042755).

We Can Work It Out is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
It was first issued as a double A-side single with Day Tripper in December 1965.
It also appeared on the 1966 US release Yesterday and Today.

The release marked the first time in Britain that both tracks on an artist's single were promoted as joint A-sides.The song was recorded during the sessions for the band's Rubber Soul album.
The single was number 1 in Britain (where it won the Ivor Novello Award for the top-selling A-side of 1965), the United States, Australia, Canada and Ireland. In the UK, it was the seventh highest selling single of the 1960s.

We Can Work It Out is a comparatively rare example of a Lennon–McCartney collaboration from this period in the Beatles' career, in that it recalls the level of collaboration the two songwriters had shared when writing the group's hit singles of 1963.
This song, A Day in the Life, Baby, You're a Rich Man and I've Got a Feeling, are among the notable exceptions.

Arranged string quartet

By Robbie Williams. By Dino Fekaris, Francois de Roubaix, Frederick Perren, Guy Anthony Chambers, and Robert Peter Williams. Arranged by Des McNutty. Pop. Score and parts. 15 pages. Des Press #6445791. Published by Des Press (A0.977358).

Supreme was one of Robbie Williams' hits in year 2000 from the album Sing When You’re Winning on the label Chrysalis Records.

It is possible that it took less time to put this song together than the legal teams needed to negotiate the distribution of royalties because it contains two interpolations, or re-recorded samples from other works. The more familiar of these is the bridge, interpolated from I Will Survive (by Dino Fekaris, Frederick Perren) first sung by Gloria Gaynor. The other is the main string riff, which is interpolated from music to the 1970 French-Italian film Dernier domicile connu (Last Known Address) composed by François de Roubaix. The rap section after the bridge is replaced with an excerpt from this.

Otherwise, this arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun.

The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.

Enjoy!
