The third movement of the Piano Sonata No. 12 in A-flat Major, Op.26, Beethoven’s “Funeral March No. 2� is played at state funerals in the UK, including the funerals of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The subtitle of this movement (“Marcia Funebre, sulla morte d'un Eroe�) translates to “Funeral March, relating to the death of a hero�, and was orchestrated by Beethoven for the incidental music to Johann Duncker's play “Leonore Prohaska� (WoO 96). This was one of the pieces played during the procession at Beethoven’s funeral in 1827. The key of this arrangement has been changed from the original to suit the ensemble better. I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces poular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second violin and viola after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st Violin. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

This divides Bach's original arpeggios between the viola and second violin. These two parts are modestly difficult. Fingerings have been provided for the more awkward arpeggios. Perfect for weddings, and funerals.
