More recently I have created this version for String Quartet in the key of G.  At the moment I have only the Sibelius computer score, and hope to record it with Capriccio Quartet once the covid pandemic is at an end. Suspend your disbelief!Why choose my Arrangement?The arrangement is in a great key for strings and most of the double stopping includes an open string. In one or two places the double stopping is a bit more tricky, so for younger players it would be better perhaps to miss out one of the notes, or to play them consecutively.The Intro.For the first violinist I include two versions of the intro and recommend that the quartet listen to the original, or to Alice’s recording for speed and performance tips. It is quite difficult to get the computer to do it musically, so the video intro is only intended as a rough guide. One of the enclosed options is intended as a rehearsal version, and has the lyrics to help. I have bowed it to include lots of downbows, and recovery of bows, which will help the other members to follow. The tricky sextuplet and triplet ornament at bar 10 can be omitted altogether. Simply pause on the ‘C’ and then recover the downbow for the next bar.I also include two versions of the violin two and viola parts. One is on two pages as a smaller font, and one on three pages with a larger font.For cellists who are a bit daunted by the solo at letter A , simply  play the fourth position semi breve Gs at bar 12 and at bars 13 and 14 too, and revert to the original score at bar 15. ie Six semibreve Gs. Perhaps a harmonic D at bar 15 would be easier than a shift at this point, and then join in unison with the rest of the band.The song moves between a straight crotchet pulse and lots of syncopated lines. This will be difficult to read on paper, but I always recommend listening to the song many times and then doing it by ear, using the notes on the page as a guide. It was recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra, becoming a chart hit in 1942, and in 1960 by Etta James, who was subsequently inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song is a frequent wedding favourite for quartets. I also have a version for string quartet without a vocalist listed on this site, which is very similar, but entails more double stopping for the players. I am also planning to do several arrangements of this wonderful classic, including a version with a simplified first violin part. This version is for a professional quartet, as the opening is tricky for the first violin. However, most of the double stopping includes open strings for one of the notes. This is a great opportunity for the singer to try her improvisational skills, so I have taken the vocal line from the original, with a few tweaks here and there. This is not set in stone however, and our recording shows my daughter embellishing the vocal line. Nevertheless, the quartet parts are almost identical to the score I am uploading. As I am classically trained, it was quite difficult, at first, for me to stick to the beat and not to try to follow the singer when accompanying on the piano!  It’s important to remember to keep the quartet in rock solid time so that she can feel free to pull the lines away from the main pulse sometimes. Little slides up to notes suit the style well too. Look out for the upcoming simpler version if this one feels a bit daunting and exposed! Have fun and post me any recordings. While the Viola provides some of the rhythmic movement originally provided by the fingerpicking style of the guitar, it is quite repetitive, so I have also included both Violin III as Viola in treble clef AND a viola part as Violin II in Alto clef, in the possibility that these inner voices would prefer to swap parts, and to prove that I don't want the violas to always play the boring bits (love to the violas!). Dan is a prize-winning composer and arranger, and was the staff arranger for the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra for many years. danedwardscreative.com This is an arrangement like no other!Pachelbel's Canon is a hugely popular piece, but unfortunately it was not written for the string quartet. The original is for three violins and basso continuo, so this presents quite a few problems when string quartets attempt to play it.  - Firstly, the 'viola' part is extraordinarily high, not only making it very difficult to play, but making that one voice stick out much more than the other three in the highest parts of the piece. Usually the high bits are just transposed down an octave but this isn't very satisfying. My solution in this arrangement is to swap the voices of the canon around so that the viola always plays the lowest part. Have a look at the score to see what I mean - the viola part isn't transposed, but it never goes above an E on the A string. - Secondly, the first two bars should have harmony, as there should be a keyboard instrument accompanying the cello. To compensate for this I've added some simple harmony in small note heads at the start, before each canon entry. - Thirdly, the cellist always gets lost in this piece. I know because I am a cellist and I always get stressed out towards the end of this piece. So I've added a reduced-size violin 1 part to the cello part so the cellist can follow along and know exactly when the piece is going to end!  Includes a full score (6 pages), and complete set of parts. This choral work was originally written by John David for the band Airwaves in 1978. It was later arranged by Peter Knight and recorded by the King's Singers. This transcription for strings follows the very popular King's Singers version. The song is about 2 1/2 minutes long, and easy to read for all string parts. Doublestops could be skipped for beginning players. Bowings are included to facilitate uniform ensemble playing. It is a secular song but is often used by church choirs. It is a lovely ensemble piece when played by string quartet, and can be used for weddings, memorial services, or any occasion requiring hopeful or somber music. This arrangement of Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman? for String Quartet can also be performed with a String Trio, since the 2nd Violin part is optional.  This song was featured in the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco, starring Johnny Depp.  It’s got a Spanish flair, which can be a lot of fun at wedding parties and receptions. 1st Violin hogs the melody, I’ll admit that.  But the 2nd Violin adds some really nice harmony, and the Viola will stay quite busy! The Cello part is essential with its hearty bass line. One thing that sets my arrangements apart from others is that I fit all of my parts on 2 sheets of music.  This makes it so the songs can fit into a binder, without the need for flipping pages! Another great thing is that I include cue lines on each part, so that every player in the ensemble can see one other person’s music at the same time.  This is so amazingly useful and has saved countless performances in the past.  If someone skips a beat or misses a measure, you can now see where they are and reconnect! This also helps with sight-reading and keeping the group together in general.
