Gabriel Fauré's Pavane Op. 50 is a short work originally composed for piano in 1887 but is better known in Fauré's version for orchestra and chorus. The piece is a pavane, a slow processional court dance that took hold in Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries and which the aristocracy used as a showcase for fancy ball gowns and ceremonial feasts. The piece's stately pace, which lends the melody its halting grace, has much to do with its frequently cited calming effect. Although Fauré described the report as carefully crafted but not otherwise important, it has become one of his most famous and commonly performed works. The Pavane is a typically frank and straightforward piece of music by Fauré, and it is around seven minutes long. The restrained use of harmony creates a delightful air of subtlety and simplicity. The piece has been reused by other composers, such as Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte. The Pavane Op. 50 speaks directly to the heart in its calm and collected manner.
 
Fauré's Pavane has been used in popular culture in various ways. The piece's melody is well-known worldwide for its frequent use in films, advertising, and sporting events like the 1998 FIFA World Cup, which the BBC covered using the Pavane. The piece has also been used in popular music, with pop artists like Eric Clapton and Jon Lord using Pavan-inspired themes in songs and instrumental compositions. The Pavane Op. 50 has been featured in several films, including The Conformist (1970), The Great Beauty (2013), and The King's Speech (2010). The piece has also been used in television shows like The Crown (2016). The Pavane Op. 50 has been arranged for various instruments, including guitar, harp, and cello. The piece's haunting musical qualities that percolate directly from the orchestra through the chorus in a straight line of solemnity and reverence have made it a standard part of the concert repertoire.

The Concert à 9 Parties, 50:1, features an eccentric instrumentation of flute (ordinary, or that at the octave [i.e. piccolo], or the two combined), alto chalumeau, oboe, two violins almost entirely in unison, viola, two concertante contrabasses, and continuo.

The work is in fact a three-movement symphony, as indicated by the original title that Telemann crossed out before he began composing: Grillen-Symphonie in the Italian, French, English, Scottish, and Polish styles. Although this title was rejected, along with the jumble of national idioms, it helps explain the music’s curiously tongue-in-cheek style (Grillen, as used in this sense, are whims) (From Music for a Mixed Taste: Style, Genre, and Meaning in Telemann’s by Steven Zohn)

Pewen is the name in Mapudungun, the language of the Mapuche people, of a tree found in the high mountains of the southern Andes. It is also known as Araucaria. Its fruit has been part of the diet of this people for centuries. This tree, which can reach a height of between 30 and 50 meters, grows very slowly and has a long life, reaching up to 2000 years.  In this piece I wanted to pay tribute to the generosity of nature and the Pewen.

The Fallen for flute solo and strings composed by Mark O’Connor in three movements was commissioned by two different flutists for their respective music festivals in the summer of 2003; Marya Martin for the 20th anniversary of her Bridghampton Festival in New York, and Beth Ross-Buckley at her Camarada Festival in San Diego. The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement. By transforming the tragic and darker qualities of the first movement’s themes, and making a departure from the quirky feet on the ground playfulness of the second movement, here O’Connor yearns and urges for a more beautiful world.

This arrangement began as one for violin trio, but was later expanded into that for brass and full strings.  In writing this, the arranger aimed to be respectful of the original recording, while not necessarily being true to it.  The aim was to provide a fusion of rock and symphonic styles, while also including some of the arranger’s own stylistic sensibilities.  This arrangement was written for the 2023-2024 West Virginia Youth Symphony, based in Charleston, WV, and was completed on April 17, 2024.
