The aria 'Mache dich, mein Herze, rein' from the St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society and conducted by Jos van Veldhoven for All of Bach. The St Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus. He is betrayed, tried, crucified and buried. The lyrics were compiled by Picander (the pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici), probably in close consultation with Bach himself. For their theme, they took the story as told by St Matthew the Evangelist. As different groups or people have their say, the singers get different roles – Christ, Judas, Peter, a slave girl, the pupils, the high priests, the people and the soldiers, etc. At key moments in the story, Bach and Picander added chorales and arias as a reflection of the biblical story. The action is suspended and the events are placed in the theological context of Bach’s day. The chorale lyrics and melodies come from the Lutheran hymn book, and were well known to the congregation in Leipzig. Even though Bach’s harmonies were new, everyone would have recognised the melody and the words. The lyrics for the opening and closing choruses and the arias were brand new, however. Both the arias and the chorales often link up seamlessly with the evangelical words.

Program Notes

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein is a deeply poignant and emotional piece from the renowned work by Johann Sebastian Bach, St Matthew Passion (BWV 244). Written as a part of the 16th passion oratorio as a love song sung by Jesus to his disciples, this piece brilliantly conveys the struggle of redemption and longing for peace.

Accompanied by a chamber baroque orchestra, the stark vocal line is delivered with an intense intricacy by the bass solo. Each note is carefully laden with sincere emotion, imbuing within the words a sense of longing and deep sorrow. As the piece progresses, the reprise of the chorus adds a layer of reflection to the message, driving home the power of the connection between Christ and his disciples.

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein is a highly moving and truly remarkable piece of music that has rightly earned a place amongst Bach's most renowned works. Mache dich, mein Herze, rein is one of the most stunningly tender and moving chorales from Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental oratorio the St Matthew Passion (BWV 244). Originally written with a full choral accompaniment for the Easter Week Vespers of 1729, Bach's skilful reworking of the melody for bass and chamber baroque orchestra in the St Matthew Passion gives the solo voice a unique poignancy and fragility. The Lutheran chorale on which Bach based his composition speaks of hearts needing to be cleansed of sin and sorrow as they prepare to meet the Savior - an idea timeless in its poignancy and universality. Bach's arrangement is akin to a prayer of reflection and contemplation, the music's restrained dynamics and sighing counterpoint creating an atmosphere of resignation and acceptance. Mache dich, mein Herze, rein is a sublime masterpiece of sacred music, truly embodying the spirit of Easter.

Program note:
In the year 2010, my wife Kristin Beckwith and I went to Paris twice, the first time in May and the second time in December right after Christmas. The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille.

I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!!

Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous!

The life of Fitch was so remarkable and has so much to teach us about the illusory America in which so many of us believe that it would make for a riveting motion picture if the novel could be turned into a film script. It would be lovely if the music could be used in such a motion picture project, but I doubt it will ever come to that. I rather think I'll end up pretty much like my Uncle John (Fitch really was my fifth great grandmother's brother) - broken and impecunious after a life of trying passionately to accomplish something worthwhile. The bitter irony is that Fitch's talent did lie in an eminently practical field, as steam-powered transportation and technology was cutting edge by the early nineteenth century when people like Robert Fulton profited handsomely from Uncle John's ideas. But Fitch was a visionary whose work far exceeded the narrow perceptions and self-interest of his countrymen - including such founding fathers as Franklin and Jefferson! Sadly, John Fitch intentionally -or perhaps accidentally -committed suicide by overdosing on an opium-based pain medication which, in combination with his drinking, proved to be fatal.

Composed by Gaetano Donizetti. Arranged by Gianmaria Griglio. Opera,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 104 pages. Gianmaria Griglio #4994801. Published by Gianmaria Griglio (A0.927845).

Don Pasquale is one of the most famous comic operas by Gaetano Donizetti; the first performance took place on January 3rd, 1843 in Paris and it is generally regarded as being the high point of the 19th-century opera buffa tradition and, in fact, marking its ending.

The introductory Sinfonia is full of catchy themes with a brilliant and sparkling ending, making it perfect for a concert. The piece was orchestrated for a rather large orchestra but here it is available in an arrangement which only requires:

- 1 flute/piccolo
- 1 oboe
- 1 clarinet
- 1 bassoon
- 1 horn
- 2 percussion players
- strings

The chamber music works are among Hindemith's most successful instrumental works of the 1920s. At the world premiere of Chamber Music No. 1, the audience even demanded a repetition of the third and fourth movements. But the title is misleading: The individual pieces rather bear concertante and soloistic markings than bow to chamber music traditions. Chamber Music No. 6 focuses on the viola d'amore which, despite its virtuoso handling, is challenged by a few individual instruments separated from the orchestral setting. The scores are based on Volume IV/3 (PHA 403) of the Hindemith Complete Edition edited by Giselher Schubert.

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 54 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037097. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533672).

Symphony No. 3, “Ave Maris Stella†(2005) was written for the Duquesne Contemporary
Ensemble and is dedicated to composer David Stock. Throughout his career, Stock has been
a tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work is
dedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significant
contributor to America’s contemporary musical life.
The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –
appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When the
composition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.
As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to change
the work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.
The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,
as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparent
with age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from the
plainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.
At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.
The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a
“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, a
fast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series of
transformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the
“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (the
underlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.
In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a more
straightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sections
move between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’s
transformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures from
Renaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.
There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motet
section ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and the
pent-up energy dissipates to the close.
