The song America, the beautiful is presented in this original arrangement for Alto Sax and strings in a very solemn version, respecting its performance tradition. The arrangement structure itself is very different from the hymn like version often performed at official ceremonies. The strings bring out the harmony changes as well as help with the mood and ambience changes of this version. The Alto Sax solo is generously written using the whole compass of the instruments range, resulting in a beautiful piece to display everything that the Alto Sax can play.

From his Ingeson Recording Studio, he’s completed film, video and multimedia original scores for clients like Nike, Honda, Chevrolet, Yoyo Music USA Inc, Mitsubishi, Mundo Arts, SAAB Miller and RCN Television. His international experience as arranger, engineer and producer includes workshops with sir Paul McCartney, Radio Head, Charlie Morgan (Elton John), and recordings at Scotland (Kim Edgar), Switzerland (Sebastian Portillo), Germany (Toby Freissler) and Spain (Iberoamerican Orchestra). Programmer and sound designer, he works with best seller music production tools, like Protools 12, Logic Pro X, Reason 6, Finale 2014, Musescore and uses top music samplers from brands like Sounds Online, Native Instruments and Vir2, among others. Various articles in specialized journals and sites have cited the composer, such as the Flutist Quarterly (Circus Brasilis - The flute music of Sergio Roberto de Oliveira), Early Music America (Something New for Early Music), Andante.com (The heirs of Villa-Lobos), 21st Century Music, Musicabrasileira.org, etc. Sergio Roberto de Oliveira has frequently been invited to lecture at American universities, and has spoken at more than a dozen institutions including Princeton and Duke. In 2009 he was Artist-in-Residence at Duke University. In addition the USA and the UK, Oliveira's music has also been played in many countries, with invitations for concerts exclusively with his music in México, Italy and Holland (Amsterdam). The Spanish Magazine Sonograma has published 2 interviews with Sergio.

Sergio is the founder and a member of the group of composers Prelúdio 21. The group is one of the most active worldwide. It holds a distinguished place in Brazilian contemporary music, having been active for 15 consecutive seasons, with a permanent series of monthly concerts since 2008. In 2011 the group released the CD String Quartets, with performances by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali. Oliveira is also a member of the group of composers Vox Novus, based in New York.

To commemorate 15 years of activity as a composer, Oliveira released a box set with 4 CDs, as well as a CD with composer Mark Hagerty, and produced the series QUINZE, with 13 concerts including his works, between July and October of 2012. More than 130 musicians, including 28 composers, participated of QUINZE (CDs and series).

His discography includes 14 CDs as producer, 14 as composer, 22 as general producer, 2 as arranger and 2 as pianist. His catalog of compositions includes approximately 115 works for various ensembles, including Symphony Orchestra.  

Sergio Roberto de Oliveira is a member of the Latin Academy of the Arts and Science of Recording.

He died from pancreatic cancer in 2017.

Symphony No. 3, “Ave Maris Stella� (2005) was written for the Duquesne Contemporary
Ensemble and is dedicated to composer David Stock. Throughout his career, Stock has been
a tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work is
dedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significant
contributor to America’s contemporary musical life.
The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the sea�) –
appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When the
composition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.
As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to change
the work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.
The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,
as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparent
with age.� The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from the
plainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.
At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out� in subtle ways.
The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a
“beginning� – as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, a
fast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.� After driving through a series of
transformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the
“beginning� again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (the
underlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.
In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a more
straightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sections
move between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’s
transformations, and “motet� sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures from
Renaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.
There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motet
section ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and the
pent-up energy dissipates to the close.
