Don Pasquale is one of the most famous comic operas by Gaetano Donizetti; the first performance took place on January 3rd, 1843 in Paris and it is generally regarded as being the high point of the 19th-century opera buffa tradition and, in fact, marking its ending.

The introductory Sinfonia is full of catchy themes with a brilliant and sparkling ending, making it perfect for a concert. The piece was orchestrated for a rather large orchestra but here it is available in an arrangement which only requires:

Madamina, il catalogo Ã¨ questo (also known as the Catalogue Aria) is a bass catalogue aria from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni to an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, and is one of Mozart's most famous and popular arias.

It is sung by Don Giovanni's servant Leporello to Elvira during act 1 of the opera. Sung to a mostly light-hearted tune, it consists of a description and detailed count of his master's numerous conquests.

The aria's two halves reverse the usual order of cavatina followed by cabaletta: in the first, a quick Allegro in 4/4, Leporello has a patter summarizing the number and occupations of Don Giovanni's lovers, while in the second, an Andante con moto in 3/4, in the style of a polonaise (with a melody similar to that of the Larghetto of Mozart's earlier Quintet for Piano and Winds), he describes his approaches and preferences, while Donna Elvira presumably listens in horror.

During the period in which these arrangements were created, Hans Werner Henze was far from being a Wagnerite. Despite this, he deliberately set out to study Wagner's music. Tristan und Isolde was the opera Henze found most accessible and it was therefore the Wesendonck-Lieder, dating from 1858 with their clear affinity to the harmony of Tristan, which became Henzeâ€™s focal point of interest. In his arrangements he was aiming 'to evoke the pre-Tristan state. For this reason, I have selected a small ensemble consisting of seven wind instruments, two horns, harp and small string orchestra to retain the preliminary study character of these Lieder. At the same time however, I am attempting to permit the Tristanesque tone which is already inherent in the piano version to unfold through harmonic separation.' - Hans Werner Henze.
