It is published in the original edition (for seven players, three spoken parts, and a single dancer) and as a trio version for clarinet, violin, and piano scored by the composer. It is also frequently performed as a concert suite using the original instrumentation. Although the concert suite is in many respects identical to the original, it omits several movements as well as small sections within some movements where spoken parts with music occur. This new edition is intended to eliminate any confusion as to what music should be included or eliminated in order to create a more de�nitive concert suite. Fortunately, Stravinsky performed or recorded the concert suite on many occasions indicating his intentions for how the work should be presented. As with all Zephyrwindmusic publications, parts come with an Unlimited Copy License, thus removing any copyright issues in the way parts are used. Parts can be used in analog form – printed on paper – or uploaded as a digital part onto a reading device such as an iPad for performance. I met Sharon Roffman in the fall of 2011 when maestro Steven Lipsitt and the Boston Classical Orchestra premiered my Symphony No. 8 … The City of Light at Faneuil Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. Sharon was the featured concerto soloist on the same program. She was an electrifying soloist in concertos by Mozart and Haydn, respectively. She wowed every one with her chops and musicality! A year later I went to hear Sharon and the BCO again, and this time I said to Steven Lipsitt that I want to write a concerto for Sharon. He thought it was great idea, and so did she. The title Serenade Rondo has the same acronym as Sharon Roffman. So in this case, the form precedes the composition. Originally I had planned to compose the concerto in the usual three-movement format. And I thought I was going to make the last movement a rondo, something in the usual ABACA thing. But as I proceeded with the composition, I realized that the work was moving in such a way that the whole thing could be conceived of as a rondo. Water carries with it the promise of life, the power of nature. Ever Forward is written in three sections - Waves, Wreck and Work. Waves begins as woodwinds sing mellow tunes over the gentle ripples on languid waters in the strings. An abrupt, unannounced Wreck interrupts the relaxed excursion - the siren alarms blaring out against the havoc. Finally, just as sailors would pull together to tackle tough jobs, the community rallies together to Work out answers to the problems that have surfaced. Cellos start up Haul Away, Joe, a short-drag chantey (used mainly for tightening the sheet) where all hands haul together on the last ‘Joe’. More and more join in on the effort, bringing the piece to a spirited finale.
