This Prelude based on the old hymn tune, Bristol, is intended principally for use on the second Sunday of Advent. Our church music group has always played it in this arrangement, ie. with a flute solo, cello playing the continuo bass and various members of the band supplying the chorale, which appears from time to time through the piece.  The  obligato part could be played by a violin instead of a flute, and I will shortly provide a version for clarinet.

Some believe its droning quality stems from it originally being composed on a harmonium (or pump organ). This Prelude was labeled as Opus No. 49 and uses a non-standard orchestra instrumentation that is very heavy on woodwinds and contains very little brass.  Please note there are no trumpet, trombone, or tuba parts in this arrangement.  See in the instrumentation page in the preview for more details.

A short Concert piece for a school orchestra.I was trying to create a fun Halloween piece full of musical cliches. There is a tuba solo but this can be played by a trombone if necessary. I have also included the tuba part as an E flat bass part. I have included optional oboe parts (which can be covered either by clarinets or flutes) and an optional bassoon part. The piece may feel a little brass heavy due to there being 4 horn parts and 4 trumpet parts; this is a reflection of the instrumentalists I had at the time of composing it. It is, as usual, thickly scored so that it will still work even if you don’t have a full compliment of players. The Double bass part can be played on a bass guitar.PERFORMANCE AND PHOTOCOPYING I freely give my permission to make as many copies of parts etc. as needed and would be delighted to have any of my music performed (there is no charge) but please tell me how it went!

It is from a set of international carols commissioned by clarinetist Lydia Calhoun for her CD, Carols for the King from Around the World, released in 2015. For more advanced performers, this perennial favorite is suitable for Christmas concerts and church preludes or offertories; it can be taken at either a moderate or a slower tempo, and is around 5 minutes in length. The clarinet solo version may be found in volume two of my two volume collection of carols for clarinet and piano, also titled Carols For The King From Around The World. First of all, my enormous gratitude to Deborah Leath Rentz for the source material: Songs and the Spirit: Hancock Shaker Village's Musical Legacy, Volume I. Transcriptions of Hancock Hymnal : 1850. In 1997, Mark Ludwig commissioned me to write a work based on a Shaker song. Ms. Rentz provided me with a lovely song, Grateful Remembrance, from her collection. The result was SEPTET: Variations on a Shaker Tune. Hancock Shaker Village is in many ways also a set of variations. It begins with a Prelude of my own devising. For the rest of the work I chose five songs from Ms. Rentz's book which provide a glimpse of a typical day for the inhabitants of this religious community. The first song, Pillar of Fire, greets the dawn and the rising sun. The second song, Glean with Care, is about the orchards and the gardens. The third, Sweet Home, is about the religious life and home. The fourth, Quick, a lively dance number, prays for God's power and grace. The last song, Farewell Dear Crossbearers, is for the dearly departed. Some variations are played: Piano + Orchestra (1,2,3,4,6,8,10,11,12,14,16,18,20,21,24,25,26,27.28,29) Orchestra only (19, 30), Brass only (4), Wood winds only (9), Brass + Wood winds only (22), Piano + Soloists from the Orchestra (7, 15, 17) Piano only (13) Prelude-Aria (Theme) begins with the pianist and after 8 measures the orchestra gradually turns on.
