Mine is an actual setting of the Stéphane Mallarmé poem of the same title. Even though the entire poem is in the voice of the 'faun,' who is a male, albeit half human-half goat, I decided that because the poem is so beautiful and seductive a soprano voice would do the words justice.  I divided the poem into five parts.  1. DESCRIPTION Lascia ch'io pianga (Let me with tears), from the opera Rinaldo, is one of the most famous and beautiful arias of the Baroque period. Its first performance was in 1711 in London. It was composed by the German composer Georg Friedrich Händel. Although he used this tune as early as 1705, in the oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno – Lascia la spina, cogli la rosa, with the libretto by Giacomo Rossi a masterpiece was created – Lascia ch'io pianga. The soprano part was based on the film Farinelli. Rhythm Herd is a celebration of rhythmic energy in words and music. Euan Tait's poem harnesses the stampede of whinnying horses, the crackle of the fire, thundering south and gives the singers the power of nature's forces. The four sopranos keep constant pulse passed between the voices as the quavers are herded into chords, melody, phrases and whole movements. Their warm tones are punctuated by riffs on the recorder, building up to an extended obbligato fughetta. Finally, the heart dissolves to ashes, the pulse of the sopranos slows, while the recorder maintains the rhythmic riffs, now in time with the human heart. Rhythm Herd was commissioned by Philomel and first performed by them on 24 November 2018.

The vocal part is generally quite free, allowing the singer to express herself freely. The orchestration is for tymp/perc/vibra/hp/cel/harps/strings(minimum : 44222) Like a supple vine, the voice seems to unfold across the orchestra, with the warm expressive themes and shining strings, with the support of the harpsichord, the vibraphone and other percussion. Certainly, there is a coloristic note in the orchestral palette, but also a wish to combine the colors of the voice and the orchestra in different manners. Through this osmosis and through the tempo rubato suggested several times, by the absence of metronomic movements, the composer has tried to create music which breathes through freedom, suppleness and poetry, in the infinite spirals of beauty and love, outside of space and time.. The orchestral version of the work was recorded in 2014 with Isaure Equilez, mezzo-soprano and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage The orchestral parts are available from the publisher on rental.

So, he loaned me several books on Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, a video about a Tibetan ethnomusicologist who is currently in prison for spying, and a few recordings of Tibetan folk music. I found the material very intriguing and fascinating. And toward the end of a five-week residency at the American Academy in Rome that summer, I completed the first draft of Tantric Psalms. The work was completed a week later at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1999, I revisited the score and added a voice so that the beautiful Tibetan chants and prayers can be invoked. Tantric Psalms is in three sections, but organized in two movements: I. Invocation Om ah hum hum (Chant sung with mouth closed.) Prayer: Then bless me to embark ... II.
