SKU: A0.890767

Composed by Georg Philipp Telemann. Arranged by Sneakwood Editions. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 41 pages. Sneakwood Editions #4781035. Published by Sneakwood Editions (A0.890767).

Edition based on Ms. D MÃœu, ms. 775

Score (20 pages) and Parts (friendly performance edition): Violino principale, Violin I, Violin II, Violin III, Viola, Violoncello and Harpsichord.

The Violin Concerto in A major (TWV 51:A4), which has come to light only fairly recently, does not take as its musical model the song of the nightingale (as in ‘La Bizarre’ [TWV 55:G2]) or of the goldfinch (Vivaldi), but the croaking of the common frog, also called ‘Reling’ in certain regions of Germany, whence the concerto’s subtitle. Nothing better could be expected of a composer who found inspiration even in crows and in the out-of-tune playing of village musicians! Although this concerto, which the manuscript attributes to Telemann, bears traces of his personal style, other features, such as the exceptionally high solo part, leave room for doubt. At a structurally important point in the first movement the soloist produces no more than a succession of repeated notes, ‘a-a, a-a’, which infect the other parts as well. Of course, this is the vowel that the frog croaks, given a distinctive tone-colour by use of the open A string and stopped D string. But worse is to come. In the second ritornello the orchestral violins ‘forget’ the beginning of their theme, whilst the cello inappropriately pushes its way into the foreground. The setting of the second movement (Adagio), probably a moonlit stretch of shallow water, then audibly inspires a pair of courting frogs to make sweet music together. We are given the opportunity to rejoice in their croaking offspring in the concluding Menuet and its rapid Double. This movement entirely dispenses with concertante sounds of nature and thereby betrays its origins in the suite, where it always takes its accustomed place in Telemann’s music. If we knew that a satirist was at work in this ‘Relinge’ Concerto, someone who was deliberately exhibiting all these deviations from good taste, then we could infer with some certainty that the composer is indeed Telemann. Since his own concertos ‘smack of France’ (as he puts it in his autobiography of 1718), we may most likely credit him with permitting his not at all ‘sullen old heart’ a little joke at the expense of the relevant concertos of a certain Italian composer… – Peter Huth (trans. Charles Johnston)

Composed by Luis Carlos Diaz. Arranged by Luis Carlos Diaz. 20th Century,Contemporary,Film/TV. Score and parts. 67 pages. Azdi #5983045. Published by azdi (A0.1029901).

On the beaches of Tijuana August 2018 It is a sound work for chamber orchestral ensemble based on the traditional and anonymous Son Istmeño La Llorona. Developed under a minimalist aesthetic influenced by ambient and experimental music. It fuses the themes of the traditional son with melodic and rhythmic motifs of popular Mexican rock songs also inspired by this traditional rhythm: La muerte chiquita by Café Tacuba and Llorona by Caifanes. It is structured similar to the format of a rock song. Start with a long base note or drone. Introduction (intro) about a descending harmony in the key of La Menor. A melody as a verse and a different melody as choir. Both melodies are presented and performed by different instruments with variations and different combinations of accompaniment and instrumentation. Variations of the thematic patterns and the ¨intro¨. A rhythmic-melodic experiment towards the end on the same descending harmonic progression as the solo part in a rock song. It ends with a fading orchestral atmosphere (outro). All oriented towards a minimalist style setting focused on melodic lines and emotional expressiveness. For a chamber orchestra. Ideally a string septet consisting of: 2 violins. 2 violas. 2 cellos. 1 double bass. Breaths: 1 trombone. 1 trumpet. 1 transverse flute. 1 Picollo flute. 1 Clarinet. 1 Oboe. Percussion of a determined note. It can be a vibraphone. Xylophone (preferably) or marimba. If it is not possible to use this type of instrument, that part is played an octave up on a piano. The number of instruments can be increased for each of the parts if needed and be convenient for the chamber orchestra in question. The Tempo can vary between 95 and 115 bpm. The work is designed so that it can be performed mainly by youth and children's orchestras. Dedicated to Tijuana beaches.

Composed by Dominic McGonigal. Contemporary. Score and parts. 85 pages. C8 Music #5993665. Published by C8 Music (A0.924083).

La Fleur des Eaux is inspired by Chanson's setting of Le Temps des Lilas, both evocative poems by Maurice Bouchor. It has the same scoring as the Chanson - tenor and orchestra - and it plays on the excitement of love coming with the waves, followed by the grief of losing love as the waters recede. The orchestra provides paints a colourful and emotive backdrop to the singer's journey. It was written for tenor Dominic Bevan who premiered it at the Leonardslee Proms with the Bernardi Music Group conducted by the composer. 6'33 www.dominicmcgonigal.com

Preface:

In the early 1890s, Debussy composed the opening of a lyrical piece in E major for violin and piano, perhaps as a shorter companion piece for the violin Nocturne he was planning for the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. After Debussy’s death in 1918, his second wife Emma often gave away sketch pages to performers or composers as memorials to her beloved husband , and this particular page was given to the Cuban born pianist and composer Joaquin Nin (1879-1949). It came up for sale in the catalogue of the British antiquarian dealer Lisa Cox in 2010 and although it might possibly be an early song for contralto and piano, the more dynamic idea in bar 12 strongly suggests the violin, especially as it begins on an open D string. Moreover, there is no text and in pieces of this length, Debussy usually wrote at least one word in, if only to remind himself where he had got to in any song.

So my starting point was a complete 12-bar melody gently undulating in the violin’s lowest register over a sensual accompaniment, rising to a climax in bar 12 and giving me a contrasting idea that I could use as a link between sections and in the cadenza. As the B section (bars 14-26) derives directly from Debussy’s opening theme by metamorphosis, my own additions were restricted to the central section (bars 27-57) - comprising a new scherzando idea (C) and the more lyrical D (bars 36-46). C returns at bar 47, followed by the opening sections in reverse order, so that the Sérénade begins and ends with Debussy’s material and is cast in arch form (ABCDCBA).

I have always admired Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit for solo piano.  When I found the poems by Aloysius Bertrand that inspired his work, I immediately thought instead of tone poems like Ravel's I would do the right thing and set the poems to music.  My work for soprano and string quartet is also titled Gaspard de la Nuit, albeit sung ... in French, of course.   I chose five from a huge collection of fantastic, macabre and bizarre scenarios.

1. À Monsieur David, Statuaire
2. Scarbo I
3. Le Cheval Mort
4. Odine
5. Scarbo II

Composed by Joseph White. Arranged by Robert Debbaut. Classical,Contest,Festival,Latin,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 66 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6363105. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939439).

The talents of Afro-Cuban violinist Joseph White were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had performed with him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised money so he could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard (1815-1888), one of the great violinists of his day. White won the Paris Conservatory’s Premier Prix in 1856 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Auber, Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. He was a major force in the cultural life of Paris as well as Europe for the next twenty years, performing on his Stradivarius violin nicknamed The Swansong. La Bella Cubana was among the original compositions s he performed on his recitals.  This volume includes the new arrangement for chamber orchestra, the original transcribed score for two violins and piano, as well as extensive biographical and background information.  For those seeking more information about the greatest violinist of whom you have NEVER heard, this is a great starting point.  Adapted from a published lead sheet, this traditional carol is adapted for young string orchestra.  If you purchase the score, please write to the arranger at debbaut@gmail.com, subject White LBC and I will send you a copy of the parts for $30 via Venmo or personal check.

Edited by John M. Laverty. First published and ï¬rst performed in 1923, Darius Milhaud’s La Création du Monde is in many ways a cutting-edge work. Heavily influenced by American jazz at the time, it features alto saxophone as the main soloist. It also incorporates an awkwardly written percussion part that is an early example of a scored drum set part. This new edition includes an updated percussion part that is scored in a more appropriate manner for today’s musician.

Prologue: The palace of Hebe in the background and her gardens in the wings

Hebe, goddess of youth, summons her followers to take part in a festival (Air: Vous, qui d'Hébé suivez les lois). Young French, Spanish, Italians and Poles rush to celebrate with a series of dances, including a musette. The ballet is interrupted by the noise of drums and trumpets. It is Bellona, goddess of war, who arrives on the stage accompanied by warriors bearing flags. Bellona calls on the youths to seek out military glory (Air and chorus: La Gloire vous appelle). Hebe prays to Cupid (L'Amour) to use his power to hold them back. Cupid descends on a cloud with his followers. He decides to abandon Europe in favour of the Indies, where love is more welcome.

Program note:
In the year 2010, my wife Kristin Beckwith and I went to Paris twice, the first time in May and the second time in December right after Christmas. The weather was magnificent in May. Our friends Seph and Roger met us there. Being long-time veterans of Paris, they took us all over the city: Le Marais, the Left Bank, Montmartre, Sacré Coeur, Père LaChaise cemetery, Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Jardin du Luxembourg, Jardin des Tuileries, Notre Dame cathedral, Eiffel Tower, the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt, the canal at Saint Martin, etc. Since the weather was so great we basically stayed outside the entire two weeks. My wife Kris said that we had to return next again to Paris to go inside the museums. So we did. The weather in Paris after Christmas was very damp and chilly. So we did indoor activities: Le Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Palais Garnier, etc. We even attended a beautiful performance of Swan Lake by the Paris Opera Ballet at L’Opéra Bastille.

I should also mention that on both occasions I met up with a former student of mine from Berklee, Joe Makholm. He makes a living in Paris playing jazz piano. Joe got us a gig at the Swan Bar in Montparnasse. On the first occasion we did it as a trio with a French bass player. I played flute. On the second occasion, we did it as a duo. Playing jazz in Paris? You can’t beat that!!!

Early this year, Steven Lipsitt and I had a chat about my writing a new work for the Boston Classical Orchestra. My last work for the BCO was a piano concerto with Robert Levin as soloist. I told Steven that this time I wanted to write a symphony. He said, Sure. Go ahead. I told him it would be about Paris. He said he would put Mozart’s Paris Symphony on the same program. I said, Fabulous!

Symphony No. 8 … City of Light (2011) is in five movements.

1. La Seine Presto, Moderato
2. Basilique du Sacré-Coeur Largo
3. Palais Garnier Allegro, Trio
4. Avenue des Champs-Élysées Allegro
5. Musée du Louvre Largo, Moderato

This work is dedicated to my wife and muse, Kristin Beckwith.

Composed by David Warin Solomons. Arranged by Colin Bayliss. 20th Century. Score and parts. 23 pages. David Warin Solomons #2028841. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.580941).

This is from a suite of pieces written variously for recorder orchestra and for chamber orchestra The five movements are: 1 Meinau Rag 2 An Amble round Mercury 3 Pretty How Town 4 Landscape before sunrise 5 Little Laser Lady Each movement has its own story and reflects various places where the composer has lived or poems that have inspired him: Meinau Rag was written in honour of his 8 month stay in La Meinau, a suburb of Strasbourg, while teaching English at the nearby Hotellery School - it was one of several ragtimes, a style he experimented with on the guitar at that time. An Amble round Mercury refers to the pond and associated statue of Mercury in the centre of Tom Quad at his college, Christ Church Oxford. The ostinato theme is one that he has used on many pieces and was originally written to accompany a setting from the Book of Elijah - and in that day thou shalt say O Lord - in his college days. Pretty How Town, a perky and rhythmically complex piece, is based on the poem - anyone lived in a pretty how town by e.e.cummings. The more laid back Landscape before sunrise is based on a setting of many ways in which the world says Goodnight and is inspired by the view from the composer's 18th floor flat in Aldgate East overlooking a multicultural population. The rhythms of the original song Goodnight follow the phrases in each language: Good Night, buona notte, gute Nacht, kali nykhta, oyasumi nasai, nos da...etc Little Laser Lady, an upbeat end to the suite, is based on a poem by a friend of the composer, whose girlfriend (and wife to be) would always visit him in her Laser (a make of car in Australia) (She is the sun in the afternoon, she is the night's familiar, she comes on a beam of yellow gold light......) The orchestration is: Piccolo [except in the 4th movement], 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, Clarinet, Bassoon and string orchestra including double bass. The pdf file contains the score and separate parts. The sound sample is an electronic preview. Also available: all the scores together under the title Sweet 4 chamber orchestra.
