With pronounced usage of the pentatonic scale, Syzygy invokes my personal love of Chinese orchestra (as well as some genre fusion to spice up the general aesthetic). I was sixteen when I wrote this, my first large-scale piece, and therefore was very fond of it; but I never got so big for my britches that I didn't ask for help. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers in 1965. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of Unchained Melody have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. The Righteous Brothers recording achieved a second round of great popularity when featured in the film Ghost in 1990. In 2004, it was number 27 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.

These two had been scored for military band.  It can be played by the full orchestration here, or by just the strings.  The ecossaise is an energetic country dance in duple time in which couples form lines facing each other.  Ecossaises were usually danced in 2/4 time.  Although the word ecossaise is derived from the mid-Fench term for Scotland, any connection with Scotland is unclear.  The orchestration is for Flute (with Piccolo doubling at the octave), 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets in A (Clarinets in B-flat are also included in the set), 2 Bassoons; 2 Horns in F, 2 Trumpets in B-flat; Timpani (G2, A2, D3), Triangle, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals; Violin I, Violin I, Viola, Violoncello, and Contrabass.

On that day, amid accompanying splendour, the music-loving Grand Duke Michail Nikolaievich (1832-1909), youngest brother of Tsar Alexander II, married Princess Caecilie of Baden (1839-91), daughter of Archduke Leopold of Baden. Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Wiener Allgemeine Theaterzeitung (16.10.1857) remarked that both works have caused a sensation in St. Petersburg and are truly genial Viennese sounds full of verve and melody. Since tradition demanded that the German Princess Caecilie adopt a Russian name - Olga Feodorovna - before her marriage, so Johann's Caecilien-Polka also underwent a change of identity. On 8 December 1857 Carl Haslinger announced the publication of Strauss's Olga-Polka, on the title page of which is the inscription: Dedicated to her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga, née Princess of Baden. It was under this title, too, that Johann himself first conducted the work in Vienna at a concert in the Volksgarten on 1 November 1857, shortly after his return from Russia. The life of Fitch was so remarkable and has so much to teach us about the illusory America in which so many of us believe that it would make for a riveting motion picture if the novel could be turned into a film script. It would be lovely if the music could be used in such a motion picture project, but I doubt it will ever come to that. I rather think I'll end up pretty much like my Uncle John (Fitch really was my fifth great grandmother's brother) - broken and impecunious after a life of trying passionately to accomplish something worthwhile. The bitter irony is that Fitch's talent did lie in an eminently practical field, as steam-powered transportation and technology was cutting edge by the early nineteenth century when people like Robert Fulton profited handsomely from Uncle John's ideas. But Fitch was a visionary whose work far exceeded the narrow perceptions and self-interest of his countrymen - including such founding fathers as Franklin and Jefferson! Sadly, John Fitch intentionally -or perhaps accidentally -committed suicide by overdosing on an opium-based pain medication which, in combination with his drinking, proved to be fatal.

The compositional process for the piece began for O’Connor in 2003, the very day the war was launched in Iraq. The piece was finished about three weeks later around the time the statues of the Iraqi dictator fell in Baghdad. This music is a reflection of the people who lost their lives in the war. This particular impact on his music makes for quite a different result from O’Connor’s usual optimism. However he finds a way to weave in a sense of a better future in the third movement.
