At the end of 1784 Mozart was for the first time admitted to a Viennese Masonic lodge. In 1785, he composed a Masonic funeral music. This short but extremely poignant work is often seen as a stepping-stone between the Great Mass in C minor and the Requiem. 

Despite being considered one of Mozart's absolute masterpieces, it is rarely performed due to the uniqueness of its original orchestration: 2 Oboes, 1 Clarinet, 3 Basset Horns, 1 Contrabassoon, 2 Horns, Strings.

An ideal orchestral introduction to Mozart’s Requiem KV 626, it is however virtually never performed in the same program, due to the completely different orchestrations and keys of the two pieces. 

This arrangement makes the Masonic Funeral Music match with the key (D minor) and the uniquely peculiar orchestration of the Requiem (2 Basset Horns, 2 Bassoons, 2 Trumpets, Timpani, 3 Trombones, Strings), recreating the nuances of the original piece with the colors of Mozart’s last composition.

This edition of the Mozart flute and harp concert was directed by harpist Marie-Claire Jamet and flutist Chistien Lardé, both former teachers at the Paris Conservatory. The cadenzas were written by Madame Jamet, who also fingered, pedaled and provided ossias for a number of passages in the harp part. The flute part was completely annotated by Mr. Lardé.The orchestral score contains a number of ossias passages for the harp. The score and complete parts, a piano reduction and the solo parts, and the individual parts are all available for sale   Orchestration: 2 oboes, 2 horns in C, strings

The solo part for harp also contains a reduced version of the solo flute part, for ease of performance.

This overture would make a lively concert opener for a group with smaller forces, or work just as well with a large string section.  In the opera itself (Il re pastore, The Shepherd King; 1775), Mozart's overture  segues directly into the opening scene of Act One.  Other Mozart overtures that segue thusly have been arranged with concert endings, such as The Abduction from the Seraglio (arr. Anton Andre) and Idomeneo, King of Crete (arr. Carl Reinecke).  Most of the music contained in this arrangement is Mozart's, including the existing material from the original overture, developmental material of that music, and a segment extracted from the opera's final section.  The work is about six minutes in length and is scored for one flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns in F, two trumpets in C, timpani, and string orchestra.  A NotePerformer3 audio file is available from the arranger, as are parts in pdf format.
