The text was written in 1847 as Lyte was dying from tuberculosis. He died three weeks later.The text for the hymn is based on Luke 24:29 where the disciples asked Jesus to abide with them toward evening as the day is coming to an end. This hymn is a prayer asking God to stay with us throughout life, our trials, and even death.
