Composed originally as a vocal duo as I walked one day from Denning Point in the East End of London to sing at a service at St Michael's Cornhill around 1986, this version can be played on various instruments but preferably duos of the same instrument or at least instruments of the same range. The words of the original vocal duo are: I heard a happy song on a lonely city street; but it was a song of the past. It was a song from the days when the street was a meadow path; it was a song when the flowers on the window boxes had grass for company. It was a song when the Cathedral could be seen above the rooftops. I heard a happy song on a lonely city street; but it was a song from the future: song from the days when the street will dance with children It was a song when the flowers in the window boxes will learn to sing. It was a song when the rooftops won't be seen above the clouds. I heard a happy song on a lonely city street; and it is a song of now But it is a song I will sing from the rooftops to entrance the clouds. Performed by Ölveti Mátyás and Mády-Szabó Eszter of Budapest Scoring Cellos.

This is based on my vocal duo on the poem by Jacques Prévert. It relates how the soldier took leave, left his army cap in the cage and went out with the bird (of freedom) on his head. [literal translation] I put my army cap in the cage and went out with the bird on my head Now then, don't we salute any more? asked the commander. No we don't salute any more replied the bird. Oh, OK, pardon me, I thought we saluted. said the commander. You are quite forgiven, because anyone can make a mistake. said the bird. Performed by Ölveti Mátyás and Mády-Szabó Eszter of Budapest Scoring Cellos.

Instrumental Duo based on my setting of Marie Keyser's Poem La Tour de Hölderlin Elle est près du fleuve dormeur debout mais le saule incliné toucherait de sa cîme l'eau L'église vieille dit les heures de l'île où la nuit descend Je la vois encore son toit de gris dans le gris de l'eau. pressens dans la tour de bois ma demeure la folie la folie le silence clos clos vigilance Oh Ne pas altérer ce qui reste qui reste, et le doit. Was bleibt aber stiften die Dichter. (It stands by the sleepy river But the bending willow would touch the water with its very top The church - an old church - tells the hours from the island where the night descends I can still see it, its grey roof in the grey of the water I have a presentiment in the tower of wood, of my dwelling place, of madness, of silence Closed in, closed in but keeping watch Oh never change what remains and should remain Was bleibt aber stiften die Dichter.....) [What remains, however, is the stuff of poetry This quote from Hölderlin himself is reflected in the second cello at bars 43 to 45] Performed by Ölveti Mátyás and Mády-Szabó Eszter of Budapest Scoring Cellos.

This work is based on 4 melodies by Telemann but with many additional augmented-second twists, in Jewish music style, and various decorations. The original melodies are: Herr wie lange (Lord, how long) This is a canon for two voices based on the psalm text and forms the beginning and end of the work Herr, wie lange willst du mein so gar vergessen, wie lange verbirgest du dein Antlitz vor mir! Lord, how long you forget me how long will you hide your face from me The other pieces are based on Telemann's settings for voice and keyboard of poems by his contemporary Daniel Stoppe Glück - (Happiness) Das glücke kömmt selten per posta, zu pferde es geht zu fusse, schritt vor schritt; sein eigensinn ist nicht zu zwingen; Happiness seldom comes by post or on horseback It goes on foot step by step It does not demand compulsion Jeder sein eigener Richter (Each his own judge) Ich will vor meiner thüre kehren; ich habe gnug für mich zu thun; ich kenne mich, ich bin kein engel; ein jeder mensch hat seine mängel, wer diese tilgen will, darf lebenslang nicht ruhn. I will turn from my doors I have enough for myself to do I know myself, I am no angel Every person has his faults Anyone who wishes to wipe them out Can never be at at peace all his life Wind (Wind) Wind macht aus thoren kluge leute; durch wind verdient der narr sein brodt: The wind makes fools into clever folk The fool earns his bread by the wind Performed by Mády-Szabó Eszter of Budapest Scoring Cellos.

By Ölveti Mátyás and Mády-Szabó Eszter. By David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical. Full Performance. Duration 190. David Warin Solomons #706118. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1103222).

Duo inspired by a poem by Jacques Prévert: Le Bouquet Que faites-vous là petite fille Avec ces fleurs fraîchement coupées? Que faites-vous là jeune fille Avec ces fleurs ces fleurs séchées? Que faites-vous là jolie femme Avec ces fleurs qui se fanent? Que faites-vous là vieille femme Avec ces fleurs qui meurent? J'attends le vainqueur [What are you doing there, little girl, With those freshly cut flowers ? What are you doing there, young girl, With those dried flowers ? What are you doing there, pretty woman, With those faded flowers ? What are you doing there, old woman, With those dying flowers ? I'm waiting for the victorious one] In my mind there were initially several possible interpretations of the poem My original thoughts were that le vainqueur means the conquering Christ and that the woman is waiting all her life with flowers before a church - waiting in vain for her saviour another possibility is that the woman is waiting for the winner of her affections it could even be that le vainqueur refers to the invading German army but this would not explain the fact that she waits all her life but, finally, as Raphaèle Larazoni suggests, (and more plausibly in view of other poems by Prévert) the vainqueur is simply the winner in a war - there is never really a winner in a war, so the woman waits all her life in vain.
