It is the fourth work in a set of brief solo cello pieces that all explore the same musical material from different perspectives. Clausula (noun, Latin) – an ornamented cadence especially in early Renaissance music The work is flexible and lyric-gradually expanding and contracting its basic musical material within a passionate discourse. The Greek myth of Actaeon has numerous variants. In the most well known version (as told by the poet Kallimachos/Καλλίμαχος), the goddess Artemis was bathing in the forest when the hunter Actaeon mistakenly came across her. Transfixed by her supernal beauty, he gaped, whereupon the goddess transformed him into a stag, lest he speak to anyone of what he had seen. The now-cervine Actaeon was then torn to pieces by his hunting dogs. This piece does not attempt to portray the myth programmatically. Rather, it explores musically the transformed Actaeon’s internal emotional state following his encounter with the goddess.

Included in his collection Le nuove musiche from 1602, It is considered one of the most popular solo madrigals of the 17th century and has remained a prominent piece in vocal pedagogy. Alessandro Guarini wrote the text of the madrigal. The song is distinguished by its leggiadria and dolcezza, and it was one of the first of Caccini's songs to be widely disseminated through Italy and Europe. Amarilli, mia bella is the oldest song in the 24 Italian Songs and Arias. Various composers have reworked it, and it has appeared in vocal anthologies up to the present day.Le nuove musiche is a significant collection of monodies and songs for solo voice and basso continuo by the composer Giulio Caccini, published in Florence in July 1602. It is one of the earliest and most significant examples of music written in the early baroque style of the seconda pratica. The volume contains 12 madrigals and ten arias and is dedicated to Lorenzo Salviati. It is known for its essential introduction, which clearly describes the purpose, intent, and correct performance of monody from the time. The preface also includes musical examples of ornaments and expresses Caccini's disappointment at inappropriate ornamentation by the singers of his day. Le nuove musiche was highly influential and inspired many similar collections in the seventeenth century. It is regularly anthologized in modern collections, and its success changed the course of music history.

The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. When I first saw the enormous chair Rachel Gardner and Carlos Canul constructed for A Gift from the Bower, an outdoor, multi-disciplinary group exhibition conceived by renowned artists James Surls and Charmaine Locke, I had a vision of a cellist seated in a chair on the chair, performing solo in a bower deep in the woods of Splendora Gardens. I shared this image with Rachel, who didn’t think I was nuts, and over the course of several weeks, composed a piece for unaccompanied cello to be performed at the opening of the exhibit. I was honored when cellist Patrick Moore agreed to premiere the work; his formidable technique and the deep expression he brings to his playing inspired me to embrace the challenge of composing a solo for his instrument.Knowing my piece would be performed outdoors, I was inspired to evoke the rhythm of sound events one hears in woods, especially the rise and fall of wind as it moves through branches and leaves. The very opening of the piece and later, what I hear as an extended coda, were created as moments for the cellist as much as for the listener and are performed in a sort of meditative state, calling to mind the age-old question, “If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?� The repeating measures of 16th notes in the piece’s demanding middle section pay tribute to two of my heroes, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. While composing the work, Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello Solo was another important point of reference, as was double bassist Eberhard Weber's 1973 album, The Colours of Chloë.Once finished, it made sense to name the piece A Gift from the Bower since the opportunity to compose the work was a gift, and in exchange, so is the music I have composed.A Gift from the Bower premiered on April 22, 2023, by Patrick Moore at the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature.A revised version of this piece was completed on September 5, 2023.
