This humorous solo cello piece was written while the composer was an undergraduate student at the Boston Conservatory of Music (now the Boston Conservatory at Berklee). One day the composer and a cellist friend of his were walking down a sidewalk in Kenmore Square when, all of a sudden, a looney man jumped into the busy traffic on Commonwealth Avenue playing a melody on a slide flute. The theme which opens this piece is that tune. The music that follows depicts him darting around creating chaos with cars honking their horns at him, etc. This is a fun piece. Enjoy!

When listening to this piece I imagine how a  shadow traipse behind it's person; and how it'll disappear in an instant when the light has gone. This piece make me think of Peter Pan's shadow specifcally trying to remove himself from the boy,  and tip toe away into the night. Although the audience may think that Peter Pan's shadow should have a more light-hearted tune. I think the opposite, I like to think of it has more of a lament; Peter Pan's  shadow has tried countless times to escape and has never succeeded. The shadow  has lost count of how many times he's tried to set himself free, and is rapidly losing hope.  All he can do for some resemblance of freedom is fade away when light is no longer around.

Transcriptions and arrangements were quite popular and effective means for a romantic composer to promote new works, reach a wider playing audience or boost sales of sheet music. Brahms was certainly not a stranger to this practice: the composer himself produced many transcriptions for piano or piano duo, but also versions of clarinet sonatas and the cello e-minor sonata for viola. The beautiful first violin sonata exists in a version for cello by one of Brahms’ most prolific and favourite arranger Paul Klengel - but perhaps it is unfair to ask a pianist to re-learn that piece in the new key of D-major. In comparison to the boisterous and vigorous Op. 99 cello sonata, the d-minor violin sonata offers an introspective drama of a restless composer, well suited to the darker voice of the cello. With the constant advancements in playing technique and modern cello strings, the balance is less of a problem. Thus, the piano part remains unchanged, and subtle changes in cello register can be implemented to utilize the whole range and character of the instrument, while keeping the integrity of the original ideas and musical material.

Uses a hoody and who manages to steal him can ask for money in exchange for his return; Alicanto is a bird with bright eyes and wings, whose flight does not project shadows. It feeds on precious minerals and help the miders to find them, since he did not see them. If he sees them, leads them to a cliff; Peeira is a keeper fairy wolves, that communicates and controls the packs.The composition, like previous compositions of the same cycle, integrates modal languages, modulating them freely and intersecting them with alternative sounds.

Program Notes: This work is the third of three solo cello pieces written for Micah Claffey on pastoral/nature themes. The title refers to the surface of a body of water as one’s head breaks through after a long and strenuous swim beneath it. The core of this work is about defining the character of peace through the odyssey of a single cello’s musical voice. The peace theme starts as just a seed in the beginning; incomplete; represented by the first four notes (a pitch class: 0,4,6,7 or inverted as 0,1,3,7). The cello then plunges into tempestuous waters, but the seed is never lost throughout all the metamorphoses it goes through and all the commotion that surrounds it and this middle section becomes a time of catharsis and refinement. Finally, in the latter third of the work, the theme of peace breaks the surface in its complete form, starting out timidly, but soon climaxing to a powerful and penetrating statement and ending with a sense of relief, clarity, and renewal that exist not in spite of the tumultuous journey, but because of it. The first movement begins with a slow, dark introduction before the love song emerges .... The second movement is a lively samba. As the title indicates, it is a little samba infused with Bach-like counterpoint, although a bit crazier. Villa-Lobos might find this amusing .... The third movement is a slow meditation for the cello on a passacaglia-like theme in the piano. The last movement, Mais uma vêz (meaning One Mo' Time in English), is a samba like the second movement, but it is set more homophonically, more dance-like in character ....
