The obligatory harpsichord plays Bach's original Prelude No. 1 in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier (transposed to F major) while the strings provide a harmonization to Gounod's melody. Violin I doubles the vocal part, so the piece can be performed as just an instrumental work.

I have made this arrangement for simplicity and to give a different sonority to the interpretation although already used in many other arrangements. The string simply makes rounds, thus giving harmonic color simply. The piano does the sixteenth notes only using the right hand and the voice keeps the original melody. The key is in F major because it is intended for tenor.
