Because the next thing I knew I was absolutely engulfed in the writing of this work for the next six months.Like all my works, this one is an emotional journey, and my own nickname for it is Quincie, The Comic Healer. Each movement tells a progressive story of the different stages of a journey through a long period of grief, illness, depression and chronic anxiety. The overall mood of the whole piece is extremely energetic, loving, warm, compassionate and audience friendly, and while there is some heart ache in the middle of the first movement, the work is also extremely comical and hilarious in its third and fourth movements. It has a great sense of slapstick humour alongside the deep ache of grief and unfathomable sadness. (To realize his ideas Cage needed a percussion ensemble to accompany the dance troupe with which he worked. His solution to the impracticability of this was to create various percussion-like timbres from the studio piano which all dance spaces have.) In Heisenberg... all the instruments are engaged in a music made up of sound effects and unusual timbres; but because all the effects, in the case of the string instruments, must come from a limited number of strings, the preparation of these instruments are mutable — throughout the piece the performers are constantly preparing and un-preparing their instruments. This principle of mutable preparation has been carried over to the piano as well and thus the performance takes on the characteristic of an alien dance as a great deal of the work involves the logistics of setting up each succeeding phrase. Two themes are cited in this chamber music. The first is the Korean traditional folk song “Gyeongbokgung Taryeong� and the second is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star� composed by the world-famous Austrian composer Mozart. In 1892, when Korea (the country's name was Chosun) and Austria established diplomatic relations in 1892, Gyeongbokgung was the place where Gojong, the last king of the Joseon Dynasty, held office. Unfortunately, diplomatic relations were established in Tokyo, Japan. Therefore, “Gyeongbokgung Palace� can be said to be a historical building that retains the pain of the times in relation to the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. The two quoted themes alternate with each other, and the traditional Korean rhythm “Jajinmori� is placed between them. In particular, in the second half, two themes were composed at the same time, which symbolically expresses the close relationship between the two countries. The performance of U-Tube is a little different from the original score.
