The students selected my piece for performance without knowing that I was working with the same teacher. They have performed the work several times. Rustic Fanfare - Flute Trio.The first section is an opening flourish or fanfare in choppy eight-bar phrases with no instrument being more prominent than the others. There follows a slower, more thoughtful passage with the instruments moving together in the main, before returning to the original tempo. The third part is much spikier and altogether more chaotic within a staccato, canon figure being conspicuous before calming down into a lyrical, descending passage exploring some harmonic modulations. It ends with a reprise of the third theme before coming to a loud climax. The piece lasts for about three and a half minutes.

This bright, sunny arrangement of an old hymn tune for flute trio opens with a fanfare section based on the beginning of the hymn melody, which comes back again and again throughout the piece.  Between these fanfares, the verses and chorus of the hymn are played with a variety of differing accompaniments.  Flute 3 even gets a chance to carry the melody in its low register!  This piece would make a great addition to any church service or flute recital.  Duration: about 3 minutes.

Distant Glittering Orbs (2003) for solo alto flute was commissioned by Frederick Butler andwas written for and dedicated to flutist Laurel Ann Maurer whose brilliant playing was fullyin mind during the composition.The title of the work provides the poetic image behind its conception -- imagining interstellarobjects (suns, stars, planets) existing just outside of our field of clear vision. It is an intimatepiece, yet exploring a conception of the far reaching beyond -- making use of the alto flute'sdistinct timbre.The opening section of the work is slow and flexible -- with a series of expanding and freerangingchromatic gestures, exploring and augmenting sets of notes. A faster section occursnext -- marked glittering spirals -- consisting of sweeping gestures. Some other names for this popular tune are 'Dawns Gwyl Ifan,' 'Hela’r Sgyfarnog,' 'The Hunt of the Hare,' 'St. John’s Eve Dance,' and 'Newcastle Beer.' There's even a version in 3/4 time used as an operatic ballad. Not a hunter? This tune is also great for drinking, or as something new to kick off your St. Patrick's Day festivities. Eleanor Rigby is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1966 album Revolver.It was also issued on a double A-side single, paired with Yellow Submarine. The song was written primarily by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney. The song continued the transformation of the Beatles from a mainly rock and roll- and pop-oriented act to a more experimental, studio-based band. With a double string quartet arrangement by George Martin and lyrics providing a narrative on loneliness, Eleanor Rigby broke sharply with popular music conventions, both musically and lyrically. Richie Unterberger of AllMusic cites the band's singing about the neglected concerns and fates of the elderly on the song as just one example of why the Beatles' appeal reached so far beyond the traditional rock audience.
