Canon in D - Johann Pachelbel - Flute Trio, Keyboatd - Advanced/Intermediate - Digital Download.Johann Pachelbel's celebrated Canon in D is perhaps the most famous canon ever written. A canon is a polyphonic device in which several voices play the same music, entering in sequence. Pachelbel's Canon in D was originally scored for three violins arranged in canon, accompanied by a basso continuo playing an ostinato pattern, repeating the same harmonic progression throughout the entire somposition.Regis Bookshar has now arranged this composition for a Flute Trio which play the melody in canon and a Keyboard instrument, either a Piano or Organ, which plays the ostinato pattern. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students and is perfect for concerts, recitals and church services, especially for weddings, but could be performed for any occasion. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (22 pages).This version of Pachelbel's Canon in D is written in the key of D Major, as was the original version. However, another version, transposed to the key of Bb Major, to make it a little easier for some younger performers, especially brass and woodwind players, is also available, if you would prefer. The original publication was printed in soprano clef (with g on the bottom line), a common practice in France at the time. The score & parts of this edition are all in treble clef and the notation has also been modernised e.g. tr substituted for + to indicate a trill. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy this sonata's equal independent parts.

OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the  Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music.There are 4 movements, Doucement, Courante, Allemande and a pair of minuets. The three flute parts are equal and independent and the Sonata is suitable for players of intermediate standard and above. Written in the French Baroque style which, unlike the Italian Baroque, includes all necessary ornamentation in the parts, the sonata makes an enjoyable concert item for players and audience alike.

This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.

The earliest manuscript dates from the nineteenth century and the piece only emerged from obscurity through radio play in the 1970s. Now one of the best-loved and ubiquitous classical pieces, the Canon’s repeating chord sequence has inspired countless pop tunes from the Streets of London, to I Should be so Lucky and Don’t Look Back in Anger. This version is arranged and transposed to a suitable key as a Trio for three Flutes. An optional part 4 is included which can be played on any bass instrument to add texture and harmonic context. The original note values have been doubled to make the rhythms easier to read. The linked youtube performance is the Clarinet version of this arrangement. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, and being a Canon, all but the bass part play the melody.
