SKU: A0.1266468

Composed by Solage. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #859199. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1266468).

Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work in the history of medieval music. Here are some of its historical significances:

1. It is one of the twelve surviving works attributed to Solage, a French composer who lived in the late 14th century. Solage's works are known for their complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and expressive melodies.

2. Le basile de sa propre nature is a four-voice ballade that features a text about the mythical creature known as the basilisk. The lyrics describe the basilisk as a monster that kills everything it sees with its deadly venom. The music is characterized by its intricate rhythms and harmonies, which reflect the text's vivid imagery.

3. The ballade is preserved in the Chantilly Codex, a manuscript that contains a collection of French secular music from the late 14th century. The Chantilly Codex is one of the most important sources of medieval music, and it provides valuable insights into the musical practices of the time.

4. Le basile de sa propre nature is an example of the Ars subtilior style, which was a highly experimental and complex musical style that emerged in the late 14th century. This style was characterized by its use of intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and unusual notational practices. The Ars subtilior style was highly influential in the development of later musical styles, and it remains an important part of the medieval musical canon.

Overall, Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work that reflects the complex and experimental musical practices of the late 14th century. Its vivid imagery, intricate rhythms, and complex harmonies make it a valuable contribution to the medieval musical canon.

Lyrics:

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.
He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being. He is a monster of great power,

And he is feared by all who know him.
He is a creature of the earth,
And he is a master of death. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly. He is a creature of the night,
And he is a master of the dark.
He is a monster of great might,

And he is feared by all who hear his name. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.
All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.

Solage was a French composer and probably also a poet who lived in the late 14th century. He composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior, a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the century. Solage is an obscure composer, and aside from what can be deduced from the pieces attributed to him in the Chantilly Codex, nothing else is known about him. There are several interpretations of his name, and it is not clear whether his first name was Jean or Charles.Ā

Ā The ars subtilior was a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the 14th century. It was characterized by complex rhythms and pitch, and it was a transitional period between the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Solage was one of the composers who fit into this school, and he composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior. Stylistically, Solage's works exhibit two distinctly different characters: a relatively simple one usually associated with his great predecessor and elder contemporary Guillaume de Machaut, and a more recherchĆ© one, complex in the areas of both pitch and rhythm, characteristic of the ars subtilior.Ā

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. Classical,Folk,March,Opera,Romantic Period. 10 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #743841. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1143525).

This arrangement adapted for flute quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions. Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

Composed by Georges Bizet, Francois Bourne. Arranged by David Heywood. Opera,Romantic Period. 65 pages. David Heywood #5204847. Published by David Heywood (A0.910423).

The opera Carmen by Georges Bizet is almost universally considered to be the greatest opera ever written,
and if you have ever heard any of it, you already know why - the lyrical beauty and power of the
fantastic songs that are in it. Serious flute players have always included the famous theme and variations
based on Bizetā€™s music, composed by Francois Bourne for flute and piano, in their programs, and it
remains one of the most popular works in the entire flute literature. Here is a flute
quartet version of this amazing work scored for Three C Flutes with optional Piccolo double in the
Flute two part, and Alto Flute, with an optional Bass Flute part that copies the Alto
part if you want to use five players and beef up the lower notes. Rest assured that
this arrangement is not a simplified version - it retains all of the difficulty, passion,
and energy of the original piece. The technical passages are divided between first and
second flute, with the lower parts driving the engine that both adds lyricism and
excitement to this energetic juggernaut. This piece is every bit as much an obsession
as it is the ultimate program closer!

Composed by F-J. Gossec (1734-1829). Arranged by RUSSELL T. KING. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival. 9 pages. EMK Music #1006631. Published by EMK Music (A0.1425866).

This piece is excellent for practising ensemble skills as well as for filling that small gap in your program with something light and entertaining. You can use as much rubato as you like.

Franēois-Joseph Gossec (1734 – 1829) was a French composer of operas, string quartets, symphonies, and choral works. His Gavotte, from his opera Rosine, ou L'épouse abandonnée (1786), remains familiar in popular culture because Carl Stalling and Charles M. Jones used arrangements of it in several Warner Brothers cartoons. Arguably the most notable of these is Porky Pig's dance to an uncredited version of Gossec's Gavotte in Jones’ Porky's Cafe (1942). Composed by P. I. Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. 26 pages. Diego Marani #352979. Published by Diego Marani (A0.744984).

Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings in C Major was written with an ear towards one of his idols, a certain 18th century composer by the name of Mozart. The title and structure of the piece are taken from the serenades of the latter, though this is certainly Tchaikovsky's own particularly 19th century rendering of these older ideas. That it is a masterful work, is demonstrated by the fact that it still remains among the most performed and appreciated by the public alongside the serenades by AntonĆn DvoÅ™Ć”k and Josef Suk. Cast in a classical four movement outlay, the work begins with a sonata form movement (Tchaikovsky calls it a sonatina, i.e. little sonata, though it is a rather robust form, replete with a slow introduction and full development). This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Composed by P. I. Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. 32 pages. Diego Marani #460664. Published by Diego Marani (A0.854102).

The final movement begins with slow and subdued section, based on a Russian folk song, stands in stark contrast to the core of the movement, which is a very quick-paced and rollicking finale based on another Russian folk melodyā€”this time a dance tune. This dance tune spins out and gives the orchestra a rather strenuous workout. It is almost as if the piece is continually building and building, seemingly getting faster, until Tchaikovsky channels the inventiveness and unpredictability of his beloved Mozart. This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Composed by Jean Sibelius. Arranged by Diego Marani. 20th Century,Classical,Instructional,Opera,Romantic Period. 20 pages. Diego Marani #1055309. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1477926).

Valse triste (Sad Waltz), Op. 44/1, is a short orchestral work by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was originally part of the incidental music he composed for his brother-in-law Arvid Järnefelt's 1903 play Kuolema (Death), but is far better known as a separate concert piece.
Sibelius wrote six pieces for the 2 December 1903 production of Kuolema. The first was titled Tempo di valse lente - Poco risoluto. In 1904 he revised the piece, which was performed in Helsinki on 25 April of that year as Valse triste. It was an instant hit with the public, took on a life of its own, and remains one of Sibelius's signature pieces. It is considered one of the most beautiful and moving waltzes in the history of music

This arrangement for flute quartet (Flute 1, Flute 2, Flute 3, Flute 4 or Alto Flute) is suitable for any occasion: classroom, repertoire and recital.
