Published by EMK Music (A0.833983). 'La Chevaleresque' has been variously translated as 'a titled lady riding a horse', the 'spirit of chivalry', 'the cavalier' and so on. Nevertheless, the traditional link between chivalry and the gallant knight on horseback is quite evident. In the music itself, which has a consistent underlying pulse, Burgmüller cleverly manipulates the notation to express the various gaits of a horse, starting with an 'elegant but unsteady walk' and culminating in a brilliant semiquaver gallop! It’s great fun to play.

The Merry Peasant was written by Schumann in 1848 when it was included in the first part of his ‘Album for the Young’ which was written for his three daughters. These comparatively easy pieces were intended to be played by children or by beginners. It is often now given the more contemporary title of The Happy Farmer which is used for this publication. The style and the major key evoke a sense of a rural worker returning from the fields at the end of the day in a good mood. The melody inspired the song Red Wing (1907) and it was used in the underscore of the film, The Wizard of Oz.

The overall effect is an endearing charm that has contributed to its longevity.

However, it is probable that he became familiar with the syncopated rhythms of ‘Ragtime’ and of the ‘Cakewalk’, used in Le Petit Negre, through the music of Scott Joplin. Le Petit Negre is taken from Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ , a collection of pieces for Piano that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma, after her death at the age of fourteen. Debussy used language that was in common usage at the time, but some of his titles, including this one, now sound unavoidably racist. In addition to syncopation, Debussy also uses other techniques in this piece that have been adopted by jazz musicians, for example, pentatonic scales and chromaticism.
