Written in 1926 for piano, Chrissemas (Christmas) Day in the Morning used an English folk song, O Dame get up and Bake your Pies.  It has a happy, exciting mood with piquant harmonies. All four parts get the song from time to time and there is a surprise noise at the end. It is set by John Gibson for 4 C flutes. Special note: since this is not necessarily a Christmas-y piece, you may wish to title it: A Northumbrian Pipe-Tune and play it at any time of year!

However, it is probable that he became familiar with the syncopated rhythms of ‘Ragtime’ and of the ‘Cakewalk’, used in Le Petit Negre, through the music of Scott Joplin. Le Petit Negre is taken from Debussy’s ‘Children’s Corner’ , a collection of pieces for Piano that he dedicated to his daughter, Claude-Emma, after her death at the age of fourteen. Debussy used language that was in common usage at the time, but some of his titles, including this one, now sound unavoidably racist. In addition to syncopation, Debussy also uses other techniques in this piece that have been adopted by jazz musicians, for example, pentatonic scales and chromaticism.

Its popularity as a piece of light music and as a theme tune was further enhanced when lyrics were added in English and in several other European Languages.

These comparatively easy pieces were intended to be played by children or by beginners. It is often now given the more contemporary title of The Happy Farmer which is used for this publication. The style and the major key evoke a sense of a rural worker returning from the fields at the end of the day in a good mood. The melody inspired the song Red Wing (1907) and it was used in the underscore of the film, The Wizard of Oz.
