The Skye Boat Song is a late 19th-century Scottish song adaptation of a Gaelic song composed c.1782 by William Ross, entitled Cuachag nan Craobh (Cuckoo of the Tree). In the original song, the composer laments to a cuckoo that his unrequited love, Lady Marion Ross, is rejecting him. The 19th-century English lyrics instead evoked the journey of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) from Benbecula to the Isle of Skye as he evaded capture by government soldiers after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. It is often played as a slow lullaby or waltz. It entered the modern folk canon in the twentieth century with versions by Paul Robeson, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Roger Whittaker, Tori Amos, and many others. Bear McCreary adapted the song as the opening theme music of the 2014 TV series Outlander, sung by Raya Yarbrough, changing the text of Robert Louis Stevenson's poem Sing Me a Song of a Lad That Is Gone (1892) to Lass to fit the story.

This well known and haunting Scottish folk melody, featured on the Television drama Outlander, is attractively arranged for flute quartet. The first half of the arrangement is in the first and second octave range, then at measure 39 the 1st flute takes the tune into the third octave with shimmering 8th note harmonies in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th flutes. This is an ideal repertoire choice for performance at any time during the year and especially around St Andrew's Day (30th November). Written in 1926 for piano, Chrissemas (Christmas) Day in the Morning used an English folk song, O Dame get up and Bake your Pies.  It has a happy, exciting mood with piquant harmonies. All four parts get the song from time to time and there is a surprise noise at the end. It is set by John Gibson for 4 C flutes. Special note: since this is not necessarily a Christmas-y piece, you may wish to title it: A Northumbrian Pipe-Tune and play it at any time of year!

If you need a well-known song associated with Dublin, Molly Malone is an obvious choice. The four lines blend effectively, attractive rhythmically and harmonically, making it enjoyable to perform. Very suitable for students or amateurs, the three lower parts are quite easy with the 1st flute more challenging. Perfect for a concert of Irish music this is an excellent item to include in your Celtic repertoire.

The Barnyards O’Delgaty is one of the most famous ‘Bothy Ballads’ (a song sung by farm labourers in the northeast region of Scotland). The farm of Barnyards is on the Delgaty estate a mile north east of Turriff.

The melody is derived from an old Lowland love song called ‘Linton Lowrie’ by Alexander MacKenzie and James Ballantine thought to have bee composed early in the 20th Century. A reference to ‘Linton Lowrie’ can be found in the chorus:
 
Linten adie, tooren adie,
Linten adie, tooren ay,
inten lowerin lowerin lowerin,
The Barnyards o Delgaty.
 
This lively arrangement by Kate Agioritis traverses a range of keys, and provides each player with an opportunity to showcase the playful melody.
