It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. In doing so, he hopes to spark more interest in these less common clarinets. This piece is excellent for practising ensemble skills as well as for filling that small gap in your program with something light and entertaining. You can use as much rubato as you like.

François-Joseph Gossec (1734 – 1829) was a French composer of operas, string quartets, symphonies, and choral works. His Gavotte, from his opera Rosine, ou L'épouse abandonnée (1786), remains familiar in popular culture because Carl Stalling and Charles M. Jones used arrangements of it in several Warner Brothers cartoons. Arguably the most notable of these is Porky Pig's dance to an uncredited version of Gossec's Gavotte in Jones’ Porky's Cafe (1942). Topsy Turvy is a ragtime two step march. Topsy Turvy refers to something that is head over heels or mixed up and confused. It all sounds fine, but you could say the melody could have been written upside down!  It is set by John Gibson for clarinet quartet (2 Bb, 1 alto clarinet, 1 bass clarinet  and there is an alternate Bb part to take the place of the alto part).

The Star-Spangled Banner is a great repertoire piece for beginning chamber ensembles. First, it is something familiar, and this arrangement is based on the more traditional harmonic setting that students are used to hearing which will speed the learning process and build confidence. Second, although some directors/performers wish to play to the end in a no-nonsense manner, (without slowing or rubato), most prefer a more dramatic interpretation with ritards, extra fermatas, and even improvisation, which will encourage the ensemble to listen, lead, and follow in order to stay together. Third, if well-prepared, an ensemble could enjoy many high-profile performances of this piece at sporting events and other gatherings where our National Anthem is customarily performed. Ensembles are encouraged to perform this memorized.

Felix Mendelssohn wrote 12 String Symphonies when he was a 12 year old prodigy in music. You can detect what he was studying as a child, but you can also find the musical stylistic qualities that came from Mendelssohn as a mature composer. This 6th String Symphony is in three movements, taking about 9 minutes to play. The 2nd Trio of the middle movement makes use of a Lutheran hymn tune, something Mendelssohn did in his larger symphonic works. The score and separate parts are provided (2 Bb clarinets, alto clarinet with an alternate Bb part provided, bass clarinet).
