It's also a matter of scholarly conjecture that Bach wrote 'The Art of Fugue' for the keyboard, as some will argue that certain Contrapunctii (?!) are almost impossible to play, bearing in mind that the sustain pedal had yet to be invented. And thus, the most credible path would be that Bach wrote them as A) Academic exercises for study or B) To be played by a suitable ensemble. I'm going with the latter obviously! I include Donald Tovey's conclusion to the work, its brilliance is noted the world over, but surely not what Bach intended, but damn close!

The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.

There had been a 1934 film also titled Babes in Toyland starring Laurel and Hardy, and three television adaptations prior to the Disney film, but Disney's was only the second film version of the operetta released to movie theatres and the first in Technicolor. The plot, and in some cases the music, bear little resemblance to the original, as Disney had most of the lyrics rewritten and some of the song tempos drastically changed, including the memorable song Toyland, a slow ballad, which was sped up with only the chorus sung in a march-like rhythm. Cradle Song is a beautiful piece that MacDowell wrote at about the time his wife suffered an illness that resulted in her being unable to bear children. This piece is quite beautiful, and would be a good filler for your recitals - a piece to play in between the difficult & showy ones.
