There is a theory that El grillo refers to Carlo Frillo, a singer who worked for the same patron as Josquin, Cardinal Galeazzo Sforza, and that it was intended to remind the prelate that his musicians’ salaries were overdue. The Sforzas were apparently notoriously mean to their employees, in spite of (or possibly because of) the fact that one of them was happy to pay a large sum of money for a parrot that could recite the Creed. Certainly the words of this little piece, with their reference to the cricket who sings for love, seem to have a good deal more impact in this sardonic light. Although the piece is similar in form to many other frottole, it is really quite unlike most such works, especially the way the repeated notes are used for comic effect.  

In this instrumental arrangement I have add several decorations and divisions, to illustrate the words behind it, and also just for fun.

The underlying themes of this meditation piece are a sequence of shifting chords representing going to sleep and the ancient chant
Te lucis ante terminum (To Thee before the close of day...) (quoted in various parts from bar 20 onwards).

Many years ago I set the following poem by Kenneth MacLeod to a melody for voice and guitar.
This is an instrumental version of my setting, enhancing the mystery of the poem.

I saw a stranger yestreen.
I put food in the eating place,
drink in the drinking place,
music in the listening place,
and in the sacred name of the Triune
He blessed myself and my house,
my cattle and my dear ones,
and the lark said in her song
often, often, often,

This arrangement of Railway Song is one of a series of jolly and descriptive quartets (and a septet) all based on the Swabian folksong Auf de schwäb'sche Eisebahne (= on the Swabian railway) from the Tübinger Kommersbuch 1853. The music in this arrangement also mimics the speeding up and slowing down of the train and its whistles.
