The calm and simplistic opening to this piece gives it its charm, as the close harmonies open up to give any competent group an excercise in restraint. In addition, one of the most difficult things in music is to place staccato notes right on the beat, together, at a slow tempo! A good example of this is 'L'il Darlin' by Basie/Hefti, lots of bands have trouble with the 2 staccato crotchets in the main tune, placing them just so is tricky! Now, this is certainly not jazz, but the principle is the same.

Dr.B.R.Papperitz was professor of harmony at the Leipzig Conservetoire from 1851-1868 and was a major influence on the composers of his time, other than that I know very little!

J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue BWV 549a in D-minor is one of his earlier works, believed to have been transcribed later to C-minor (BWV 549). This arrangement has been scored for clarinet quartet using flexible instrumentation for increased accessibility. The score has been written for E♭, B♭, alto, and bass clarinet, however, any combination of the included parts is acceptable.

A Bâ™­ clarinet part has been included for Part III to allow for one of the most common and accessible clarinet quartet settings of three Bâ™­ clarinets and one bass clarinet, however, it required transposing a couple passages up an octave when it became too low, so using a basset horn, alto clarinet, or bass clarinet is preferable. The bass clarinets do not require the extended low range. (AMA-008).

Richard originally arranged BWV 549 in C-minor for SATB saxophone quartet (AMA-006) and I adapted it for clarinets (AMA-007), then made the BWV 549a in D-minor version. The editing of this arrangement has been in consult­­ation with the Bärenreiter (1972) and Breitkopf & Härtel (2013) Urtext editions for organ.

8 Ball is an exploration of the emotional swings of grief — shock and sorrow, emptiness and isolation, pain and finality — mixed with wistful, treasured memories recognizing the blessing of sharing life with a loved one, and added to this the hope of eternal reunion. It’s written in memory of my brother, Tex, who we lost to COVID in 2020. In homage to his passion, dirt track racing, there is a contrasting section of paint-swapping, fender-bending frenzy, which comes to an all too sudden end as did his life. The title has nothing to do with billiards but refers to his long-tenured racing number and logo.

The music uses unconventional scales which are actually six-tone pitch sets treated as different key centers. They produce a lush mixture of consonance and dissonance that at turns feel comforting and unsettling.

Writing 8 Ball was a cathartic experience to explore my own emotions, cement my brother’s proper place in my memories, and produce a tangible expression of my love for my brother. It was written as an assignment in the 2023 summer composition workshop at Tarrant County College. I’m grateful to my instructor, Dr. Aaron Kline, the music department at TCC, and the musicians of our performing quartet for their part in bringing this music to life.

Hans Christian Lumbye - Pictures of a Dream (Drømmebilleder) set for clarinet quartet by John Gibson. This entertaining piece was written in 1846 by Lumbye who became known as the Strauss of the North as his music was similar to Johann Strauss's and popular at the time. This piece lasts about 5 1/2 minutes and has many tempo changes....the reason for an advanced level rating. In fact, it may be useful for your group to play it with a conductor! The music is really dream-like with its many changes of mood, much like how dreams often move from one scene to another without warning. It is set for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass clarinet.

Unlike Joplin's characteristic rags, Bethena captures the sentimental side of the composer.  Dedicated to his late wife, Freddie, the Bethena Concert Waltz is mournful while capturing the joy of their brief marriage.  This arrangement is suitable for professional recitals, but can be performed by younger musicians as well.  Optional lower octave notes are included in the 1st clarinet part, which goes up to a high F briefly but is not necessary.  The first and second clarinet parts are of equal difficulty, with the third and bass part being slightly easier.  A bass clarinet with extension below Eb is not necessary, but in a few measures optional low notes are included.  A great addition to a recital, wedding, or program focusing on African American or American composers. Total length is approximately 4:30.  A real crowd pleaser!
