Nimrod, is the ninth of the Enigma Variations composed by Edward Elgar in 1899. Here, the music is arranged for Clarinet Quartet, directly from the orchestral score. Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.

The single pdf file contains the full score plus individual parts for three Clarinets and one Bass Clarinet. There is also an alternative part for Eb Alto Clarinet included. 

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. All parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. The overall performance time is around three minutes.

It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. I have shamelessly combined ideas from three famous pieces popular for funerals: Pachelbel's Canon, Elgar's Nimrod from the Enigma Variations and Chopin's Marche Funebre from his 2nd Pianoforte Sonata. So it is a passacaglia, having a solemn repeating 4 bars in the bass; 8 variations on a 4 bar phrase; and an accompanied canon having each variation repeated twice, in the second clarinet after delays, while a new variation appears in the 1st. All in D minor, but a tierce de Picardie ends the piece. Only 3 minutes: after all that work!

Edward Elgar, well known for his Pomp and Circumstance pieces and The Enigma Variations, composed this Christmas Greeting in 1909 for 2 voices, 2 violins, and piano. The lyrics were written by his wife, Caroline. The phrase, friends in storm or calm. sets the tone of the piece. This setting is for 3 Bb clarinets and 1 bass. It runs about 4 1/2 minutes.
