1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

SKU: A0.1137251

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. Classical,Film/TV,Instructional,March,Romantic Period. 14 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #737451. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1137251).

This arrangement adapted for clarinet quartet was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change of key, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as for use in ensemble practice between musicians of different traditions. Ludwig van Beethoven began concentrated work on his Symphony No. 7 in A major Op. 92 in 1811, it was completed in 1812, and was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, and premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813. It is considered a remarkable example of the more ebullient side of Beethoven's compositional personality and evidence that even after the onset of deafness, he still found cause for musical optimism. The second movement Allegretto is a funeral march in everything but name. Often several contrasting melodic ideas are made to coexist, as if Beethoven were imagining several processions converging on the cemetery at the same time. As he was working on this symphony during the years of the Napoleonic Wars, this experience was probably within his experience. It was also used as the soundtrack to the film Knowing, by director Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage, where it is used in the final scene of the film. Beethoven called Symphony No. 7 his most excellent symphony, and a music critic of the time reported, this symphony is the most melodically rich and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven's symphonies..

Composed by Horatio Spafford, Philip Bliss. Arranged by Hugh Levey. Praise & Worship,Sacred. 19 pages. Woodwindly.com #6529745. Published by woodwindly.com (A0.937294).

Clarinet Quartet - 3 x Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet

The words of this hymn were inspired by a series of tragedies in the life of hymn writer, Horatio Spafford. He lost his 4 year old son in a Chicago fire in 1871 and two years later he lost all 4 of his daughters when the ship, SS Ville du Havre, sank while they were travelling from the USA to England. Only his wife survived the journey. He wrote these words while he travelled alone to meet his grieving wife shortly afterwards.

The hymn was first published in 1876, set to a tune by Philip Bliss which is still known as Ville du Havre. It exists in versions with either 4 or 5 verses. This arrangement for clarinet quartet consists of 5 verses, each with slightly altered harmonisation or articulation, to suit the words. For example in verse 3 the words Nailed to the Cross are accompanied by accented stabbing chords. Verse 5 has some trumpet-like fanfares to match the reference to the Trump[et] Calls in the text.

The words to the hymn are shown in the score and in the first clarinet part, so the arrangement can be used in a worship setting. Verses can be omitted to suit your liturgical needs. Similarly, if the arrangement is used for an instrumental performance, verses can be omitted as required.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Baroque,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 45 pages. Jmsgu3 #1015109. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1435016).

BACH: Partita No. 1 BWV 825. Contents: Praeludium, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Menuet I, Menuet II, Gigue. Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, BWV 825, is a highly significant and influential work for several reasons: It is part of Bach's monumental Clavier-Übung (Keyboard Practice), a collection of some of his greatest keyboard works published in 1731. The Partitas were groundbreaking compositions demonstrating Bach's mastery of counterpoint, harmony, and keyboard technique. Bach referred to the Partitas as his Opus 1, indicating their importance as his first major published keyboard work aimed at refreshing the spirits of music lovers. The Partita No. 1 was the first of the set, published in 1726 and dedicated to a newborn prince. The work expanded the traditional Baroque Partita form by adding a Prelude and two Minuets, showcasing Bach's innovative compositional approach. Each dance movement is a masterful example of its style, from the virtuosic Praeludium and Gigue to the expressive Sarabande. It profoundly influenced subsequent composers and established Bach as a keyboard music pioneer. The Partitas' technical demands and musical depth set new standards for the genre. So, Bach's Partita No. 1 is a seminal work that exemplifies his genius as a composer, innovator, and keyboard master, making it one of the most important compositions in the Baroque era and the history of Western music.

Composed by Leo Delibes. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. 10 pages. Diego Marani #5010887. Published by Diego Marani (A0.528171).

Sylvia, originally Sylvia, ou La nymphe de Diane, is a full-length ballet in two or three acts, first choreographed by Louis Mérante to music by Léo Delibes in 1876. Sylvia is a typical classical ballet in many respects, yet it has many interesting features that make it unique. The prelude to the first act and the pizzicati in the third are the significantly more famous sections of this already notable score. The latter, the more famous, is a well-known example of pizzicato style. This section is, according to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, traditionally played in a halting, hesitant style that appears to have been no part of Delibes's conception.

This arrangement for clarinet quartet includes the following parts: Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet.

Composed by Solage. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Medieval,Traditional. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #858782. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1266048).

Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work in the history of medieval music. Here are some of its historical significances:

It is one of the twelve surviving works attributed to Solage, a French composer who lived in the late 14th century. Solage's works are known for their complex rhythms, intricate harmonies, and expressive melodies.

Le basile de sa propre nature is a four-voice ballade that features a text about the mythical creature known as the basilisk. The lyrics describe the basilisk as a monster that kills everything it sees with its deadly venom. The music is characterized by its intricate rhythms and harmonies, which reflect the text's vivid imagery.

The ballade is preserved in the Chantilly Codex, a manuscript that contains a collection of French secular music from the late 14th century. The Chantilly Codex is one of the most important sources of medieval music, and it provides valuable insights into the musical practices of the time.

Le basile de sa propre nature is an example of the Ars subtilior style, which was a highly experimental and complex musical style that emerged in the late 14th century. This style was characterized by its use of intricate rhythms, complex harmonies, and unusual notational practices. The Ars subtilior style was highly influential in the development of later musical styles, and it remains an important part of the medieval musical canon.

Overall, Solage's ballade Le basile de sa propre nature is a significant work that reflects the complex and experimental musical practices of the late 14th century. Its vivid imagery, intricate rhythms, and complex harmonies make it a valuable contribution to the medieval musical canon.

Lyrics:

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.
He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being. He is a monster of great power,

And he is feared by all who know him.
He is a creature of the earth,
And he is a master of death. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.

All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly. He is a creature of the night,
And he is a master of the dark.
He is a monster of great might,

And he is feared by all who hear his name. He is a basilisk by his own nature,
And he has no other way of being.
All those he sees he kills suddenly,
For his venom is deadly.

Solage was a French composer and probably also a poet who lived in the late 14th century. He composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior, a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the century. Solage is an obscure composer, and aside from what can be deduced from the pieces attributed to him in the Chantilly Codex, nothing else is known about him. There are several interpretations of his name, and it is not clear whether his first name was Jean or Charles.

The ars subtilior was a manneristic compositional school centered on Avignon at the end of the 14th century. It was characterized by complex rhythms and pitch, and it was a transitional period between the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Solage was one of the composers who fit into this school, and he composed the most pieces in the Chantilly Codex, which is the principal source of music of the ars subtilior. Stylistically, Solage's works exhibit two distinctly different characters: a relatively simple one usually associated with his great predecessor and elder contemporary Guillaume de Machaut, and a more recherché one, complex in the areas of both pitch and rhythm, characteristic of the ars subtilior.

A big band and dance band classic, 'Come Fly With Me' is one of Frank Sinatra's most famous songs and is a great example of mid-century popular music orchestration. This arrangement for clarinet quartet retains the big band phrasing and stylings of the Sinatra original. It is a piece that is musically complex but which is light and fun enough for both players and listeners alike to enjoy, and works well in casual and formal settings - a great addition to gig or concert repertoire!

Composed by Solage. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Chamber,Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Medieval. 6 pages. Jmsgu3 #861529. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1268995).

Plusers gens voy is a song composed by the late 14th-century French composer Solage. The song is written for four voices: tenor, contra tenor, cantus, and triplum. The lyrics of the song are Plusers gens voy qui leur pensee / A leur dame ne sont pas nee / Car ele est de si grant beaute / Que nus ne la puet veoir sans faille which translates to More people have seen in their thoughts / That they were not born for their lady / For she is of such great beauty / That no one can see her without failing.

The overall message of Plusers gens voy is a declaration of love and admiration for a lady of great beauty. The lyrics suggest that the lady is so beautiful that it is impossible for anyone to see her without failing. The song is a tribute to the lady's beauty and is likely a reflection of the composer's feelings towards her. The song is a beautiful example of medieval French music and poetry and is still performed and studied today.

Arranged clarinet quarte: 3 Bb/bass Video is my brass quartet arrangement Day Tripper is a song by the English rock band the Beatles that was released as a double A-side single with We Can Work It Out on December 3, 1965. Written primarily by John Lennon, it was credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. Both songs were recorded during the sessions for the band's Rubber Soul album. The single topped charts in Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands and Norway. In the United States, Day Tripper peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and We Can Work It Out held the top position. Day Tripper is a rock song based around an electric guitar riff and drawing on the influence of American soul music. The Beatles included it in their concert set-list until their retirement from live performances in late August 1966. The single was the first example of a double A-side in Britain Its success popularised the format and, in giving equal treatment to two songs, allowed recording artists to show their versatility. The band's use of promotional films to market the single anticipated the modern music video. In the UK, Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out was the seventh highest selling single of the 1960s. As of December 2018, it was the 54th best-selling single of all time in the UK – one of six Beatles singles included in the top sales rankings published by the Official Charts Company.

He wrote in many of the forms current in England at the time, including various types of sacred and secular polyphony, keyboard (the so-called Virginalist school), and consort music.
