The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.

Dadme albricias, hijos d'Eva is the second piece in the suite 'A Renaissance Christmas for Clarinets', a collection of four villancicos from the Spanish Renaissance. The villancico is now synonymous with the Christmas carol and this selection has been arranged in a lively, idiomatic way for Clarinet Quartet. (The complete suite is available here, as are the other three pieces as separate items.) Parts are provided for three Bb clarinets + bass clarinet, with the 3rd clarinet part also written out for Eb alto; in addition, a keyboard part is provided for support, making this a highly flexible resource for both performers and teachers, full of warmth, joy, and seasonal cheer. ¡Feliz Navidad!

The work was written sometime between 1785 and 1787. On 2 September 1788, Mozart entered it into his personal catalog of works as part of a set of ten canons. Although some of the canons in the set of ten have serious (that is, religious) lyrics, was meant for fun, a gesture of mocking, scatological humor directed at a friend of Mozart's, the baritone Johann Nepomuk Peyerl (1761–1800).
