“The Little Drummer Boy,†originally titled “Carol of the Drum,†was written in 1941 by American composer, Katherine Kennicott Davis. The song tells a fictional story of a poor boy at the Nativity of Jesus
who, without a gift to bring, performed for baby Jesus. The popular Christmas song was first recorded by the von Trapp Family Singers and further popularized by the Harry Simeone Chorale.
In this arrangement for clarinet quartet, the melody and harmonies soar over the rhythmic “drum†in the lower parts. Performers should note the 2 against 3 rhythms and the key changes.
