The truly distinctive sound has ensured that the piece has continued to be played and arranged for all sorts of groups in the almost century-and-a-half since the play was first performed. This particular arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for a Mixed Clarinet Quartet: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, and 1 bass clarinet. The melody stays primarily in Clarinet 1 but does jump between the top three parts and players will need to be able to play most of the range of the instrument regardless of which part they are playing. That said, most intermediate players should be able to play this piece given they have the range and it will be a challenge for less experienced players. It was during these years that Dvorak composed his Symphony No. 9, From the New World, and the composition of his American Quartet (String Quartet No. 12) followed not long after. The quartet includes many of the same hallmarks of the symphony, particularly the liberal use of the pentatonic scale and evocation of folk songs and spirituals. The other parts are easy. Rustic Dance was composed by C.R. (Cyrus Ryerson) Howell (1857-?), a Canadian minister, artist and musician and was first published by the De Luxe Music Company of New York in 1900. It has been described as a quirky country-dance style piece.  It was used in a scene in the 1962 film “The Music Man�.

This Marche was originally written for organ in his pedagogical books. I have arranged it for Instrumental Quartet in typical Romantic Symphonic style and I have filled it with expressive markings to bring out the incredible drama of this piece. There is a Trio style section in the sub-dominant key which I treat as an instrumental duet. The piece is Advanced Intermediate realizing that it pushes many of the instruments to both extremes of their ranges. It is furthering challenging due to the plethora of romantic accidentals including double sharps and double flats and constant dynamic changes. This piece amply rewards you in the end with a very impressive and dramatic repertoire performance piece.
