In the Hall of the Mountain King was originally written by Edvard Grieg as incidental music (basically background music) for a scene in Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt. The truly distinctive sound has ensured that the piece has continued to be played and arranged for all sorts of groups in the almost century-and-a-half since the play was first performed. This particular arrangement by Mark R Lewis is for a Mixed Clarinet Quartet: 2 Bb clarinets, 1 alto clarinet, and 1 bass clarinet. The melody stays primarily in Clarinet 1 but does jump between the top three parts and players will need to be able to play most of the range of the instrument regardless of which part they are playing. This piece is originally for piano and written to help sell pianos in St. Louis during the late 18th century.  The original rag style is kept, but is expanded into a fantasy using some slow sections to add variety.  Total performance time is roughly 4 mins.  Bass clarinet would benefit from an extension but is not required and indicated with optional notes.  A great crowd pleaser!!  Everyone gets equally challenging parts throughout.  A mature group would be able to perform this with minimal rehearsal, or a great project for a younger group.  I have performed this many times and it always goes over well!  Perfect for a recital.  Start working on it now and be prepared for the next solar eclipse!

Prestissimo, the third movement from Verdi's String Quartet in e minor is an excellent opener or closer for a program!  The movement is approximately 3 minutes and is filled with excitement throughout.  This arrangement is designed for mature players, as every part is demanding.  The bass clarinet part requires fluid clarion playing, and reaches a high C.  That being said, this arrangement is very easily rehearsed and performed.  Tutti sections of long eighth note passages from the original have been adapted for winds, so while challenging the parts are all playable and accessible.  Other changes have been made throughout to allow for breathing.  Early college students could perform this piece easily or  even advanced high school students with proper guidance.  This work is a real showcase for the clarinet quartet!  Audiences really enjoy this one as every member is equally showcased.
