This piano classic in C minor, second in the series of J S Bach's 48 Preludes & Fugues, has been arranged for Clarinet  Quartet (Clarinets 1,2 & 3 in B flat and Bass Clarinet).   With concerts, recitals and wedding performances in mind, this arrangement will be popular with players and audiences alike. The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6, with the Fugue possibly slightly higher. The PDF is 21 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts. The combined duration of the Prelude & Fugue is about 3 minutes 20 seconds.

The score has been written for E♭, B♭, alto, and bass clarinet, however, any combination of the included parts is acceptable.A B♭ clarinet part has been included for Part III to allow for one of the most common and accessible clarinet quartet settings of three B♭ clarinets and one bass clarinet, however, it required transposing some passages up an octave when it became too low, so using a basset horn, alto clarinet, or bass clarinet is preferable. The Part IV bass clarinet requires several low Ds so an extended range instrument is necessary. For a version that doesn’t require an extended range bass clarinet, BWV 549a in D-minor is available (AMA-008). This version also retains more of the original octaves in III. B♭ Clarinet.Richard originally arranged this work for SATB saxophone quartet and I have adapted it for clarinets.
