It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. In doing so, he hopes to spark more interest in these less common clarinets. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955731). Wave is one of those marvelous Latin numbers for which Antonio Carlos Jobim is so famous. The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for clarinets (with that melody line descending into the chalumeau register being especially effective) and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.

It was named by Abel Tasman on the  30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there  in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as  Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne  , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly  and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more  recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s  more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.
