The notes themselves will not be difficult for any experienced quartet players. However, the real challenge here is to keep the groove going in the accompaniment while the lead player pulls the melody around, decorates it, maybe plays a little behind the beat. And the lead changes across all four parts! Without a rhythm section doing it for you, you’ll have to immerse yourself in that Latin groove. You have to feel the pulse of those eighth notes of the underlying rhythm to achieve the tight playing necessary to make this piece sound really convincing. Originally arranged for trombone quartet (and very successful in that format), I feel this (slightly modified) version works well for clarinets (with that melody line descending into the chalumeau register being especially effective) and will be a welcome lightweight addition to any concert.

When I'm Sixty-Four is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and released on their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was one of the first songs written by McCartney, who wrote it when he was 14. The song was recorded in a different key than the final recording; it was sped up at the request of McCartney to make his voice sound younger. It prominently features a trio of clarinets (two regular clarinets and one bass clarinet) throughout. I think I have made a fairly accurate transcription of the recording for standard clarinet quartet. 1st clarinet takes the melody throughout, and is joined in verse 3 with another clarinet Clarinets 2 and 3 mostly sustain, but take the counter melody in the choruses. Bass provides a steady rhythm throughout. Fun for every player. Enjoy.
