This Adagio comes from Louis Spohr's first string quartet.  The work is roughly 3:15.  A simple but effective movement,, this would work well at recitals, background music, and weddings.  An easy read for mature musicians.  The first part has an easier (young musician) version included as well.  this removes most ornaments and simplifies some rhythms.  The accompaniment parts already are basic, so with the modified first part this would be great for a young clarinet quartet!  Also a great piece to perform with a teacher and younger musicians.

Kinderszenen (original spelling Kinderscenen, Scenes from Childhood), Opus 15, by Robert Schumann, is a set of thirteen pieces of music for piano written in 1838. Schumann wrote 30 movements for this work, but chose 13 for the final version. The unused movements were later published in Bunte Blätter, Opus 99, and Albumblätter, Opus 124. Discussing the set, Schumann told his wife Clara that the thirty small, droll things were inspired by her comment that he sometimes seemed like a child. In 1840, he described them as more cheerful, gentler, more melodic than his earlier works. This piece is originally for piano and written to help sell pianos in St. Louis during the late 18th century.  The original rag style is kept, but is expanded into a fantasy using some slow sections to add variety.  Total performance time is roughly 4 mins.  Bass clarinet would benefit from an extension but is not required and indicated with optional notes.  A great crowd pleaser!!  Everyone gets equally challenging parts throughout.  A mature group would be able to perform this with minimal rehearsal, or a great project for a younger group.  I have performed this many times and it always goes over well!  Perfect for a recital.  Start working on it now and be prepared for the next solar eclipse!

Unlike Joplin's characteristic rags, Bethena captures the sentimental side of the composer.  Dedicated to his late wife, Freddie, the Bethena Concert Waltz is mournful while capturing the joy of their brief marriage.  This arrangement is suitable for professional recitals, but can be performed by younger musicians as well.  Optional lower octave notes are included in the 1st clarinet part, which goes up to a high F briefly but is not necessary.  The first and second clarinet parts are of equal difficulty, with the third and bass part being slightly easier.  A bass clarinet with extension below Eb is not necessary, but in a few measures optional low notes are included.  A great addition to a recital, wedding, or program focusing on African American or American composers. Total length is approximately 4:30.  A real crowd pleaser!

When I'm Sixty-Four is a song by the English rock band the Beatles, written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and released on their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was one of the first songs written by McCartney, who wrote it when he was 14. The song was recorded in a different key than the final recording; it was sped up at the request of McCartney to make his voice sound younger. It prominently features a trio of clarinets (two regular clarinets and one bass clarinet) throughout. I think I have made a fairly accurate transcription of the recording for standard clarinet quartet. 1st clarinet takes the melody throughout, and is joined in verse 3 with another clarinet Clarinets 2 and 3 mostly sustain, but take the counter melody in the choruses. Bass provides a steady rhythm throughout. Fun for every player. Enjoy.

Published by woodwindly.com (A0.1386176). 4 Bb Clarinets or 3 Bb Clarinet and Bass ClarinetFugue in Blue started out as a Clarinet Trio called Jazz Fughetta, indicating that it was a simple fugue in a jazz style, but without the formality of a fully worked out fugue. In this rewritten Clarinet Quartet version, the first three voices enter fugally with the second beginning on the dominant and the third back in the tonic. After a contrapuntal interlude based on the opening rhythms, the fourth voice enters on the sub-dominant.The original work was a student composition exercise, combining a conventional classical form (fugue) with a syncopated jazz style. Many years later it has been reworked in swing style with a more laid back feel and some more inventive harmony and jazz articulation. Of course, it has also had a fourth part added to create the clarinet quartet that is published here.The work is well suited to recital programmes, as a light-hearted opener or relaxed interlude in a more serious concert. It is also suited to younger players who wish to combine the discipline of ‘classical’ chamber music while learning about jazz articulation, such as falls and short notes at the ends of phrases.

Edelweiss op. 31 and Blumenlied op. 39 are perhaps two of his best-known works today.
